I used Multiple Mini Interview Questions Book by MSC Medical. It also came with a DVD. This book was really helpful. It comes with a “crash course” in ethics which WILL come in handy with some scenarios. It then breaks down the different categories of questions. For some questions it will give the scenario and explain the correct answers. Others will just give you the question for you to work out on your own. It gives you an idea about how MMI works and how to use your time wisely (considering you only have 8 minutes to present your case). It really helped me feel confident and I think it really made me stand out at interviews. I felt good about it after I left and apparently the interviewers did too! I’m a strong advocate for this resource.
@Umkcmed3, thank you for the recommendation.
Hey guys. First off, Congratulations to those who have an interview! And to those who don’t or are alternate listed- don’t sweat it! So I got accepted to this program last year as a regional applicant. My biggest advice would be to make sure not to focus on any one thing. ACTs are important, good grades are important, ECs are especially important. However, I have never seen a school truly pick a person who is well-rounded better than UMKC for this program. Honestly, you could be the biggest genius and not get in because what they look for is your potential to be a successful doctor, not necessarily how bright you are. It’s really fair game for anyone. Loosen up, prepare well, and hope for the best! And oh… make sure to KILL it at the interview You kind of got to sell yourself and give them a taste of what you stand for. If anyone wants any advice or help, PM me!
Um guys I still haven’t heard a thing from UMKC even about UG admission. Should I call them…??
I would, just to make sure. Some of my friends who did not apply early already heard about their UG acceptance…I am in-state though so it might be different.
@MissMed12 I don’t have enough posts so I can’t PM you…but how did you prepare for the interview?
@GreenSage, I would not be too worried about it, as long as your online account with the UMKC medical school shows that it has received all the required document for the BA/MD program. If you have that, your application will be considered. The UG acceptance will come. I presume if you do not get into the BA/MD program, you would not be interested to go to UMKC for UG anyway, right?
Hey Guys,
I am a junior at the moment, and I was wondering how much research and shadowing a doctor helps to get into UMKC? Also how much does sports help with the application?
@MissMed12 is right on. As a first year as well, I can say that everyone is smart and everyone did some great things in high school. But it’s not about being the smartest, or having done the most in high school. UMKC’s really looking for the complete package, someone who is good all around. The most important aspect is them believing in you to handle the work load reasonably, be authentic, and ultimately become a physician.
That said, I feel that should also something to consider when thinking about the interview. Everyone they interview will be stacked in terms of EC’s, ACT’s, grades, etc. What makes people exceptional is how they can differentiate themselves in the interviews. And by that, I mean exemplifying the qualities, traits, and values that the school stands for, which are ultimately based on being in medicine and being a physician.
I would recommend reading as much as you can about The School of Medicine, their philosophies, and beliefs, and consider them when practicing.
As always, feel free to PM me for anything.
Hey! I’ll be honest; I didn’t really prepare much for this interview. There are good resources just on google and YouTube for MMI style interviews. I suggest familiarizing yourself with the interview style before going in there. There are a lot of scenario questions and ethical questions. They want to see what doctor-like characteristics you have. Portray your interest in being a doctor through the questions. For me, I an honestly say that came a bit naturally. I felt very relaxed throughout my interview. Just keep calm and make sure to answer their questions, and don’t say thing you just want them to know about you. Add in your personal experiences to help you answer the question if it flows well with your discussion. Be confident. That’s the key! Make sure you use up as much of the time they give you, but if you don’t, don’t sweat it! There are ten MMI’s so messing up one isn’t going to completely ruin your chances or anything. Good luck!
Hi Guys, Any out of state also excluding regional got an interview from UMKC BA/MD ? My daughter is out of state and did not receive anything yet.
@Dildil, I presume your daughter’s application was not submitted until after October 15. If that is the case, you will not hear until the end of January about the interview. My son got his interview because he submitted his application before October 15, even though we are out of state. Good luck.
can someone share the mini medical scenarios which you encountered last year?
I think you have to sign a confidentiality agreement regarding the scenarios before your MMI begins. Correct me if I am wrong…
Thanks IMGDAD.
Hi everyone!
I’m a regional applicant, and I got invited to interview! Does anyone know how UMKC pools its applicants? Does UMKC have to take a certain number of applicants from each regional state?
Also, congratulations to everyone that got invited to interview! I signed up to interview on Feb. 24. Looking forward to see you all there!
@OKCThunder35 - did you apply by the Oct 15 or Nov 1 deadline? And when did you receive the interview notification?
Regarding the quota for each state, at the campus visit they told us that UMKC accepts a total of 30-35 students from regional states, not sure if there is a specific number for each state.
Congratulations on receiving an interview notification and good luck!
@mb5296 - Thanks for the info!
I applied by the October 15 deadline, and I received my interview notification on December 20.
Also, did you apply? If so, are you instate, out of state, or regional?
@OKCThunder35 - yes, I have applied to the program but by the Nov 1 deadline. Haven’t heard anything yet…maybe they will send interview notifications for Nov 1 applicants this week. BTW, I am from Oklahoma City, seems like you are too?
I’m applying from Ok too, specifically Tulsa, what are y’all’s stats?
I’m a Missouri applicant. I have an interview on the 24th of February. I applied by the 15th of October and received an email on December 20th notifying me of the interview. See you all there. Congrats and good luck to everybody who got an interview!
