UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

@goodgamekids, I totally agree. However, I believe that IMGDAD is on our side while Roentgen is trying to be a critic. It’s funny because like every comment I make on this forum gets investigated at like a psychophysiological level for no reason. Just to get something straight for people who aren’t aware, this forum is intended for students applying to UMKC (and their parents). We should be making our college decisions exempt from the opinions of others. It should be based on our own opinions and beliefs. Contrary to popular belief, I do believe there’s such thing as a “perfect fit” for someone in college. Yes, of course there’s multiple perfect fits, but one person’s experience with a school should should not dissuade someone else from going there.

The whole point of the CollegeConfidential forum is to bounce opinions off of others. Hence why students ask many sources: classmates, high school advisors, parents, those attending the school, former and recent alumni, etc. Clearly a classmate’s advice is not going to be de facto on par with an alumnus of the institution. On the same hand, a parent who will be paying for the education will have much more of a say of where you go, then an alumnus (rightfully, so). College Confidential has many students who attend the institution as well as former alumni of institutions as well.

Asking a variety of sources happens bc high school students have such a limited scope of experience to begin with before having to fork over a ton of money (usually their parents money). I’m not asking you to accept my version at all. Let’s face it, based on what you’ve posted you want someone “on your side”, as you phrase it, to “agree” 100% with your overall opinion of the program, which is quite limited (mainly due to your inexperience, not bc of your smarts). A more savvy student doesn’t want someone “on their side” just for the self-esteem boost to validate their own opinion. Different opinions (weighted on the experience of the person having gone through a program), allow an honest discussion of a school at hand, not just a cheerleading pep rally.

I understand, but I am not on here to be convinced/discouraged from attending this program if accepted. I am on here because it is the only way I can talk to other people who are applying to the same program I am and going through the same experience. I respect the perspective of an alumnus, but even then, different alumni have different opinions of the program. Of course, high school students are not going to have the experience as someone who graduated the program but thats the whole point. Before college confidential, plenty of students had to make their own decisions based on their own personal feeling about it. The students had to decide on what school to go to by visiting the school and researching it as much as possible. By “on my side” I meant not being critical of other people’s opinions. After all, an opinion is an opinion and a high school student’s opinion is no different than anyone else’s opinion because it is just a personal perspective of something. Also, when providing your insight and perspectives about this school, it is important to defend your point without directly insulting the validity of the school and the success of people who go there. It is important to acknowledge that each person has a school that fits them better than another person. I also think that people on this forum tend to overemphasize stats and rankings, which is not really the reality of the world. Most people would agree that becoming successful requires intuition, common sense, experience, and connections (rather than test scores, gpa, etc). You’re right, this forum is not supposed to be a cheerleading pep rally. But it is also not supposed to be a riot against the school.

In regards to “my opinion of the school”, I am not trying to say that this is the best place to go to for medicine. I would be stupid to say that. All I can say is that for me in my situation and my options, this would be my best option if the door were open. There are always going to be more prestigious institutions and places to go, but not everyone has the capability and aptitude to get into Johns Hopkins or Harvard medical schools. Also, some people don’t want the full undergraduate experience and would rather go straight into medicine. It is entirely based on the student and their desires and capabilities, which is why UMKC has a very well organized interview process to select its students. For example, someone who hates patient care and just wants to do bench research all day should probably not apply to UMKC (considering it is so focused on patient care). I respect alumni who share their experiences with a school. But I don’t like hearing all of the cons of the school and none of the pros, especially from an alumnus. I’m pretty sure that even an alumnus who had an overall bad experience with the program would have had SOME good experiences there to share.

Hey guys - I called the admissions office and they said that they don’t have a set date yet for releasing decisions. However, it will most likely be late this week or early next week. Good luck to everyone.

Also, I apologize for speaking out and I honestly mean this in the nicest way possible: the arguments on here are slightly going overboard. I believe only a few people are involved. So if you could please take this to another platform, where the rest of us don’t have witness it. Sorry and thank you.

If you feel anyone’s posts are inflammatory etc. you can always report them to have them removed from the thread.

I think it is very obvious who the supportive ones are. Unfortunately, sometimes when people post inaccurate information, it is the duty of others who know better to counter the claims. Sometimes this appears as bickering etc. but it is to protect you and your possible decisions in the future. If it’s important to you, you will dig yourself and determine which claims are solid.

Good luck to all of you as decisions come out. It’s tough on the nerves isn’t it?

@MiraRawjani
Thanks for that news, I was wondering when they would send out the final decisions.

Let’s all hope it’s on Friday and good luck to all who interviewed!

I called the admissions office as well and they told me the same thing (sometime later this week). And, yes, it certainly is tough on the nerves. Good luck to you all as well! Its getting tougher and tougher to wait as the decision date is approaching…

@PursuitToExcel, Don’t worry, I’ve been reading your comments lately and don’t listen to what the other guy was saying to you. If you truly believe that this is the perfect school for you, it is. Other people’s opinions do not matter at all. Trust yourself and you will make the right decision.

@Peach95, thanks for the advice. I apologize for getting on this forum and arguing with that guy, its mostly because I am so attached to this school and I have not idea if I will get in or not. I’ve heard back from many other colleges already but nothing is like waiting for this one. I have wanted to go to this school for a very long time and now I cannot believe that the decision is coming this week… Btw, I am almost positive that the latest day the decisions will be released is friday. When I called them they said that it’ll be this week but most likely the later half of the week. Good luck to you!

Does anyone remember if the decision comes by email or regular mail? Thanks!

@Hipster819, it will be electronic, as stated in the Timeline of application given at the interview.

Any day now…

@PursuitToExcel

dude we’re all as anxious as you.

We’ll find out Friday or Monday. That’s when other colleges release their decisions.

Its good to hear I’m not alone at least. Actually, UMKC told me that it’ll definitely be “by the end of this week”. You should expect it today or tomorrow. Something is telling me that its going to be Friday though bc the Ivy League release date is today and a ton of people are going to be finding out about those today. Idk at least we can count on it being today or tomorrow. UMKC is pretty good about releasing things when they say they are.

Got the email. was not admitted. regional

Are you serious??? I didn’t get anything…

On behalf of the UMKC School of Medicine, we would like to thank you for applying for a position in the B.A./M.D. program.  After careful review of your application, the Council on Selection has decided to not offer you a position in the incoming class.  The Council on Selection used all application materials to make this decision.  The Council considered standardized test score, grade point average, strength of high school curriculum, personal statement, high school activities, health-related activities, recommendation forms and the results of your interview.  No one component of the application holds greater weight in the decision-making process, and no one score, performance or category guarantees an offer of admission.

The Council on Selection had a very difficult task of selecting the new class from an extremely talented applicant pool, and the decision of the Council should not deter you from pursuing your goal of becoming a physician.  This decision is in no way a negative reflection on your ability to succeed in medical school or on your capacity for becoming a physician.  Many more students applied and interviewed for admission than we were able to accept, and all possessed a strong combination of academic performance, aptitude and ability.

You have already received a letter admitting you to UMKC’s University College.  We encourage you to consider pursuing a degree with a pre-medicine emphasis in either the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Biological Science.  Some students who enter a pre-health curriculum successfully reapply to the UMKC School of Medicine during their first semester of college.

Additionally, a degree from UMKC and completion of the pre-medicine track will provide you with the coursework you will need to be competitive for admission at any medical school.  Students completing their pre-medical program at UMKC also have the advantage of taking courses with medical students, interacting with professors who teach at the medical school, and receiving recommendations from those familiar with the medical school curriculum and faculty.

That’s the letter I got
