@chocolatina1001: Congrats. So are you going to UMKC or GPPA?
@sampil I will most likely be sticking with GPPA.
Congrats! Are you in-state?
@JessieNK Thanks! Nope I am regional.
I guess I am not in the first round :((
Did anybody get it from In-state?
Any waitlisted candidates from out of state get an offer??
Did umkc send out decisions based on regions last year?
Me neither :(( !
Daughter got acceptance letter today for out of state. Was on waitlist.
Hi Roentgen,
If you have to choose between Case PPSP and UMKC - would you choose one over other? Any thoughts.
Really appreciate all your amazing advice and insight.
So between those 2 choices, I would definitely go with Case PPSP, no question.
Several reasons:
Your education will be at a Top 40 undergrad –
That’s an awesome position to be in. Since you get a traditional undergraduate experience, in terms of the full 4 years of undergrad (it used to be a 7 year program - 3+4), you get to choose any major offered at the university that you want: https://case.edu/ugstudies/pre-professional-programs/pre-professional-scholars-programs/ (The UMKC 6 year program effectively limits you now to only 3 majors and only BAs - Liberal Arts, Bio, Chem). Even if you were to decide later that medical school isn’t really the pathway for you, you’ll still have a very solid undergraduate degree from a reputable university like Case Western.
The medical school is a Top 25 ranked med school –
Case has every home clinical department and residency training program imaginable: http://casemed.case.edu/deptsncenters/atoz.cfm?getlist=getclass&classification=2. The institutions affiliated with Case are University Hospitals, Metrohealth Medical Center, and the esteemed Cleveland Clinic. You won’t be inherently limited in terms of the match process, by coming from Case’s medical school as they have specific clinical departments and residency training programs in those specialties on site that UMKC does not have and thus you would be dependent on outside institutions (the closest being KU Med).
Case’s medical school during the basic science years is graded Pass/Fail (w/no internal tracking of rank in the first 2 years), UMKC’s medical school uses letter grades during basic science courses. Case’s basic science years is arranged more in organ system blocks which is how many medical schools have now fully arranged their curricula while UMKC’s basic science years is more a traditional subject-based set up, except for the Human Structure Function course series.
Case’s medical school curriculum has a 4 month research block in which students can pursue a mentored research project in basic science, clinical research, translational research, etc. which helps their students in terms of the residency match and Case Western’s overall research infrastructure is much greater than that of UMKC.
Hope that helps. If you have any further questions, let me know. Congratulations again!
still waiting, in-state!!
@rossrk : they will release again on May 18 for second round…long wait…
@sampil, @rossrk, Yup, I wasn’t very clear when I look back at my post, but the 2 week intervals I was talking about isn’t just for students to accept or deny their offer, but also on the admissions side as well, when it comes to giving new offers. If they didn’t do it that way, you’d have to have 1 person from admissions waiting and constantly going back to the list every time someone rejected their acceptance, which isn’t a very efficient use of their time.
April 1st and May 1st are sort of the national agreed upon dates for hearing an admissions decision and then acting on that offer to matriculate, respectively. Waitlist stuff is more on a rolling basis with no national deadlines really, although the med school will email everyone on the waitlist once the Year 1 BA/MD class is finally filled, saying there will be no more offers extended.
wondering why In-state people did not receive any offers yesterday ?
Hi Roentgen,
Thank you for your valuable advice. Really appreciate it.
To those who have accepted the offer from the UMKC BA/MD program, here are the major maps for the undergraduate degree plans w/in the 6 year BA/MD framework, which they’ve now updated for the upcoming 2017-2018 academic year:
Liberal Arts BA (BLA): https://cf1.umkc.edu/majormaps/maps/2017-2018/SOM_BLA_MD_2017_2018.pdf
Biology BA: https://cf1.umkc.edu/majormaps/maps/2017-2018/SOM_BA_MD_Bio_2017_2018.pdf

Also, please see my posts from last year regarding “life skills” to practice on from now until you start the combined program in the fall to make the transition to living away from your parents easier, and some overall advice while progressing in the program (which I worked on w/several former classmates who also gave their advice):

To those who messaged me about what textbooks are needed, you can go to the UMKC bookstore website to find out:
Undergraduate bookstore: http://compare.umkcbookstore.com/
Health Sciences bookstore: http://umkc-hs.verbacompare.com/
The courses in the major maps that I posted above that have a “MEDICINE” label and a “BMS” label are found under the Health Sciences bookstore website. Everything else that is an undergraduate course can be found in the undergraduate bookstore website.
