UMKC 6-year BS/MD Program

Congratulations to everyone who got an acceptance to the BA/MD program.

To those who got on the waitlist or a rejection, trust me, this is hardly the heartbreak you think it might be, although it might not feel that way right now. Any waitlist movement comes after May 1st, when people have finalized decisions after going through all their post-high school options. It’s good in a way that decisions came much earlier this year so that students & parents have the time to really know what they are getting into.

@medforthewin, I’d probably wait a day or two. Most people these next one and a half months are going through options and will want to find out more about the UMKC program, now with acceptance in hand, so it’s not necessary to pay immediately.

Got in - OOS…

@Roentgen Can we seek advice to specific user on this thread directly? I mean if we do not want to post here in general view?

Hey @15match, you can click on my username on the left hand side of my post. Then click on the orange message button and then just type away and you can send a private message to me that way.

Thank you so much for your early, but when I am clicking on username, screen opens with data about how many posts you made and like that. Orange colour tab says “Edit Profile”. There is no any message button on that screen.

@15match, Ah, ok. It may be because you’re a relatively new member and need some posts first. I’ll PM you.

Congratulations to all the UMKC medical students (Class of 2019, so these BA/MD students entered in 2013) who are finding out what residencies (medical training programs that prepare you to practice a specific specialty in the United States) they matched into today: https://labblog.uofmhealth.org/med-u/match-day-explained-how-med-students-take-next-career-step

As you can imagine, it’s a pretty exciting time for them and their families and friends. If you guys want to watch, there is a livestream here:

Hey guys, here is the match list for UMKC this year:
http://med.umkc.edu/sa/match-day-2019/

I’ll be doing an analysis sometime within the month, as I’ve done in previous years, just because it’s hard as a parent or applicant to evaluate match lists if you don’t have prior experience. It’s just one of many things to take into account when evaluating medical schools:

Accepted Out of State & will be attending! Do any current students know what the roommate/housing process is like?

Hey @elarson012, you can go here for starters: https://info.umkc.edu/housing/housing/oak-street-hall/

Here are previous posts to give you a better idea.

All BA/MD students are required to stay in the dorms in Year 1 (Fall and Spring). No exceptions, even if you’re from Kansas City.

Hello all, I am a parent joined this group today. Any recommendations on college counselor for this school and program. Any help is appreciated.

Hi @bamd, congrats on your acceptance. My DD is junior now and is planning to apply as a Regional student as well. Please share your experience and guide us through this process. Any help is appreciated.

@PC2020 thank you so much! I would be more than happy to help in any way I can and answer any questions you may have. If you want to, you could also private message me.

@Roentgen My DD got accepted as OOS. Are there any scholarships offered to the incoming students?

Hey @joy2019, I would definitely try to find out if anything has changed but when I was there, UMKC wasn’t really that great when it came to financial aid support that wasn’t loan based (i.e. grants, scholarships), esp. for those in the Bachelor/MD program, including even the first 2 years.
https://finaid.umkc.edu/health-professional/school-of-medicine/

Even the School of Medicine scholarships that they do have now more tend to go to in-state and regional students: http://med.umkc.edu/sa/finance/som_scholarships/

UMKC BA/MD program tuition for out-of-state students can be ridiculously expensive (for 2018-2019: $41,438 in Year 1, $51,495 in Year 2, $64,212 annually in Years 3-6): http://med.umkc.edu/bamd/finance/

It’s worth out-of-state students who get a UMKC BA/MD acceptance to really dig deep and evaluate whether the BA/MD program is indeed worth it and not feel cornered into automatically taking the acceptance, esp. since the tuition costs are indeed a huge burden, unless your family is just financially wealthy at baseline (and many of the students coming thru the BA/MD program these days indeed fall into this category). I will say the answer whether or not to accept will be different for everyone, depending on the circumstances.

@Roentgen Thank you for your response.
I am very happy for her getting accepted as OOS into the program and at the same time very confused about the decision as well. I agree the costs are very high. I have been following the threads here and got a very mixed reviews of the program. Have you completed the program at UMKC?

The goal here is not only completing the 6 yr program successfully but also what kind of residency they get into in future.

I would really like to hear from current or gradauted student parents about their views on the program.

@WGSK88 Your posts are very informative and thank you for that. As you mentioned that your daughter is in the program, i would like to get some information from you but unable to DM you.

@joy2019 - I PM-ed you my contact details.

Hey @joy2019,

Yes, I have completed the program. I’ll be coming up with an analysis of this year’s match list by the end of this week.
