UMN TC vs Morris?

Hello,

I have been accepted to these two in economics and it’s the difference between paying an extra 20k/year. Do you think the fact that UMN-TC is a top 50 in economics is worth it? Is there really a difference between graduating from the Twin Cities campus vs the Morris campus?

Thank you

So. I’m thinking there is more credibility to the flagship school. However, you could certainly start at Morris if the financials are tough.

I do think there’s a difference in getting a degree from Morris vs. TC.

Would you like both schools?

The campuses and schools are so very different in size, location, sports, etc.

Have you been to Morris?

That said, my D’s mock trial coach went to Morris undergrad and then Berkeley for law school so it’s definitely a strong school that can prepare you for great things.

My D is technically weighing both but leaning to UMN-TC. (For her, the price difference is only about $8k / year.)

And @momofd19d20 makes a good point. TC is known for accepting transfers so that would always be an option.

I am already a transfer from community college. I am also a nonresident so the price difference is unfortunately way higher.
Also, I do like small campuses but I’ve taken classes from the TC and I don’t mind it. However, the fact that it’s a top 50 makes it really hard to refuse. I really don’t know what to do :frowning:

Congratulations for your Daughter’s acceptances.

BTW you said you do think there is a difference. Could you explain more? Thanks

What was wrong with the public universities in your home state? I’m not sure it is worth OOS for either.

I’ll be paying the noneresident price as an international student and I want to stay in MN because my family is here.

Have you visited Morris? On paper, Morris looked like the best choice for our outdoorsy daughter, now a sophomore at U of MN - TC, but then we visited. Morris is really small. It only has 350 students per year who graduated at seniors, since so many people transfer out after freshman and sophomore years. If your family is in the Cities, maybe you could live at home and commute. Or you could find less expensive housing. Or you could work.

@Sofi15 they’re very different. They are both quality schools but are completely unalike.

Morris is tiny, very rural and a liberal arts college. UMN-TC is the state flagship. It’s huge, in a big city, a major research university and definitely has more name recognition nationally. Also, as you note, the Econ program is ranked.

Have you visited Morris? It’s a drive to even get to a moderate size town/city.

If you’re a transfer student already, how many years/credits do you have left before graduating? Are you currently living in Minnesota— are travel costs a factor?

You could go to Morris for a year at lower price, then transfer to TC, but you would have to be certain that all your credits would transfer to make it worth it. (I generally wouldn’t recommend going to a school knowing you will transfer, but I’m trying to factor in you financial concerns).

You should definitely visit Morris so you know what campus is like. (We know some students who were happy there, although one purposely did a full year abroad … We know others who transferred out)

What can you afford without having your parents take on loans for you?
How will you pay the 20k difference?
What do you want to do with an Economics major? Are you considering a minor?

Statistics minor yes.
the 20K would be loans. None of my family are residents in the US so I’ll have to take loans with 10% rate. I’m single and cheap so I could technically pay it off fast but at the same time, is it really worth it? I feel like I should be able to find a job with all the internships and good grades that I have.
UMN TC is ranked, but does it really matter to find a Data analyst job, a job at a bank…etc. I feel like the school matters if it’s a masters or something which I’m planning to do after couple years of work.

I don’t know

@katrina1 Thanks for your answer. The place doesn’t really matter to me. I just want to have a good degree that will help me get a job. I haven’t visited yet but I googled it and there are banks around where I could do internships and all, I’m still looking.

There are many Econ undergrads at the main campus who are never taught by regular faculty in the major. So the classes are taught by PhD students at a top program, but not the faculty at a top program. You can see what classes are being taught by faculty on the spring 2019 schedule online (by following the academics link).

@CheddarcheeseMN I already took few classes at the UMN TC so I’m aware of that. I’m more asking about wether 20K is worth having Twin Cities vs Morris on my diploma.
