UMN Twin Cities Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

How many days after her acceptance did you hear back? Is this the national merit scholarship?

We donā€™t know the school well. How do you which housing option to pick? Any guidance?

It depends on what is important to your student. Some kids are more social than others etc. Mine is looking at a couple of LLCs, so we chose those first, and then narrowed down to quieter dorms based on our best guesses for what sounded like it suited their personality using Reddit threads etc.

Here are UMN LLCs

We looked at where those were located, crawled reddit threads for student opinions of what the vibes are in the various dorms, and considered the map of the campus (with an eye to being near the theatre department. - so Middlebrook dorm is top choice for that.)

For students not considering LLCs, the dorms that tend to be first picks are Pioneer (because it is the dorm in the freshman superblock that has been completely renovated) and the 17th (because it is newish also). Middlebrook for honors and others interested in the West Bank.

It was quite a while after her acceptance. It is the National Merit Scholarship.

Have you heard anything from UMN yet? Just like your daughter, my daughter applied on 11/20 but havenā€™t heard anything directly from UMN. Waiting for the log in info to their applicant portal.

I got a letter yesterday for $11k/yr for the Gold Scholar Award for National Merit Finalists!

Surprised to see the decision posted today. Son got into CSOM. OOS

Good Thanksgiving treat. We learnt it in a week, no email, no updates. I just casually checked the portal and was pleasantly surprised. Good one.

If one is not a National Merit Scholar, when should we hear back on scholarships?

My daughter was told anytime between November and the end of March. Iā€™ve seen one or two scholarships for out of state on here. Someone my daughter knows heard in the last few days about a merit scholarship at a different U of M location (Duluth). Thatā€™s all I know and we live hereā€¦ Seems like merit scholarships mostly havenā€™t been communicated yet for UMTC, but again thatā€™s just a guess based on those few anecdotes. The process and timing seems really opaque unless Iā€™m just not aware of other information, which is possible. We would love to know what the cost will be after any merit scholarships. As of
today they are one of the most costly options on the table (she wonā€™t get FAFSA aid or any of the new money going to students whose parents make under a certain amount (?60k) so those kids will be guaranteed no debt. . We really have no clue if there is anything left this year for in state kids, even ones with great applications and ā€œstats.ā€ Learning patienceā€¦ :grinning:

My OOS son got his scholarship letter (in the mail, not email or on his portal) about 2 weeks after his acceptance showed in his portal. Of his 2 scholarships is for National Merit (Gold Scholar Award) but the other is not (National Scholarship).

So, at least for some students, non National Merit scholarships are out. I just donā€™t know if we heard on both because, if they are going to send one, they might as well send the second.

Hmmm. Now Iā€™m a little concerned. Student was accepted into CSoM back in October, but we havenā€™t heard anything about merit, not even National Merit. There was an additional form to fill out for privately funded scholarships, but that was all.

I would not be concerned. I had a kid go through the process last year and was accepted rather quickly and then offered Honors a couple weeks later in November. Merit did not show up until March. Last year it seemed that OOS got their scholarship offers much earlier than in state.
My second kid is going through the process now and seems to be following a similar path.

Acceptances still trickling out. My S22 got accepted to CLA this evening.

When did your son apply? My D22 applied to CLA on 11/20 for EA2 and havenā€™t heard back.

10/30, so EA1

Thank you for your reply. I guess it is safe to assume it will take 6 weeks or more. Weā€™ll just relax and check the portal again around mid Jan. Congratulations to your son!!

Did your child get an email to check application status or did they just check on their own

He got an email that said to check the portal. When he checked the portal, there was a somewhat subtle note that said there had been a status update, with a ā€œview updateā€ link.
