So, I have narrowed down my choices to the two mentioned universities. I want to major in CS. Being an international student it is impossible for me to visit the campuses and choose between the two. Georgia tech will cost me about 10k more than UMN. So could you guys please help me choose between the two by giving details about both the universities and their CS programs? I did my research but still I am confused. So this is my last resort now.
They are very comparable. GaTech might be slightly more prestigious, but that’s arguable, and personally I’d save the 10 grand. Minnesota has a nicer campus, but colder weather. Save the money, imho.
10k per year ? If money is tight, go to UMinn but be prepared for bone chilling cold most of your school year (Sep-May).
Check out the job/internship/coop opportunities at UMinn for CS grads, don’t know much about it as I did a similar research for ChemE grads for my D. It is very strong at GTech.

@i012575 Financially, I am not too much restricted. Obviously the less the better. But I am not sure if the quality of the CS program, the smaller student body and the reputation of engineering in Ga Tech is gonna be worth the extra 8-10K. Which university did your D choose eventually?
@khidhala Thank you very much for your opinion. I loved Minnesota’s campus! However, I am sort of worried about the large student population of UMN compared to that of Ga Tech. It’s such a tough decision to make
@devileng, my D2 is at GTech, Freshman for ChemE. She loves it there; managing to balance social life/extra-curricula with the heavy course load. UMinn was dropped from our list early, though it is tops for ChemE, coz of the weather. She chose GTech over her final two choices - UCB and UMich. We are paying full fare at GTech.
BTW, her roomie at GTech is planning to major in CS. She is a Zell Miller scholar and chose GTech over CMU SCS. She has already been signed up for an internship with Microsoft during her first summer!
@i012575 Thank you so much for all the information. She chose GTech over UCB and Umich? Nice…I see slight similarities here…I am chossing Gtech over Umich and UCLA. You are paying full fare? If you don’t mind me asking, is she an international student or out-of-state? On the topic of internships. Do you think international students can also get internships with companies such as Microsoft and google? Lastly, what do you think are the pros and cons of the fact that CS is in the College of Computing and not in the College of Engineering? Sorry for so many questions.

@devileng, we are from PA, though I moved to NYC late last year. And I work in the Bay area, so very familiar with the hitech clients there. PM me and I will respond to it.
