I’m majoring in CS, and both schools are neck to neck on most rankings for cs undergrad. I’ve heard that UMich is definitely more fun and offers the entire college experience, while gatech is much more cut-throat and practically no social life. That given, I’m wondering if a cs degree from gatech would be more valuable. Gatech is also 20k less than UMich. However, my gpa would probably be higher at UMich, which would help me if I chose to attend grad school. Are there any programs or opportunities or such that put one school ahead of the other? Both are just as far from home- I live in ny, and eventually want a job in the city.
Why would a degree from GT be more valuable than a degree from Michigan if, as you seem to know, both are neck and neck? Michigan has a stronger reputation and larger network than GT in NYC. However, I am not sure Michigan is worth the extra cost (the difference is more like $10k than $20, but still significant). If finances are not a concern, I think Michigan is a better overall choice.
" Gatech is also 20k less than UMich."
Is that per year or a total for four years? I would hesistate spending 80K more for a comparable education unless I could well afford it.
Since I got some scholarship at GT, it would be about 20k less per year. That’s my main concern, since I like everything about Michigan except the cost. But if it has a stronger rep, wouldn’t the return investment take care of that?
No, the stronger reputation is not worth $20K/year. $80K is so much money. If finances are a concern, GT is a wiser choice for sure.
I would also advise choosing GT for the reasons stated above.
What makes you think that doing CS at any of the top schools is any different in terms of stress/fun? You will have to slog from the get go if you intend to excel. It is finally dependent on the individual to make the best of what the school provides. Each school has its strengths. In the case of UMich, it is the alumni network. Does it outweigh access to a city and what it offers as in the case of GTech?
My D2 chose GTech over UMich (and UCB) and one of the reasons was the difference in COA (in her case it was $11k per year). This may not be substantial in the long run but will pay for half a year of Business school that she intends to attend after a few years of work experience. She is a Freshman doing ChemE and has been able to balance the heavy workload with the social aspects of college life very well. Let me know if you need any additional info.
I know this isn’t on the top of your list but I have lived in both states …Do you really want to deal with the Michigan winters?
Im in a similar situtation but without financial concerns. For me Michigan is about 2-3k cheaper per year for Georgia Tech. Is Tech better for CS or Mich better for CS (undergrad ofc).
You should look into the course sequences and descriptions for the CS programs at each school. My son is a CS major, too, and applied to UT-Austin, UIUC, Tech, UCB, CMU, and UCLA (accepted in CS at the first three, will hear from the last three in a week or so). He visited all except UCLA and even did a summer semester/pre-college at CMU. When he compared the actual program layout and differences in how CS is taught, he chose Tech. He just really likes the way their College of Computing is set up and the opportunity to minor in Computational Business clinched it for him. He accepted Tech’s offer yesterday (didn’t even wait to hear from CMU or UCB!). All of these schools, Mich included, are well-respected for CS. You just need to find the program and school that fits you best. Good luck!!
