@mililindks you are spot on - his chances are much better for CLA than CSE. A 30 ACT is probably in the top 25% of admitted students so he’s hopefully in good shape. Anecdotally, they seem to be paying even more attention to uw GPA this year than in years past. The good news is that some dings have already happened and your son is not among them. While his GPA is low, his ACT hopefully will compensate for that and hopefully bump him into an Admit for CLA.
Once he’s in CLA he can declare his major in CS and even double major and/or minor. It’s a very flexible degree and the requirements for major are pretty minimal in terms of GPA and so forth (that’s actually NOT the case in CSE which has restricted entry to the more popular majors). He would be getting a BA rather than a BS just due to the liberal-arts focus of CLA; however, that won’t hurt him if he chooses his courses carefully and supplements with additional math and science as appropriate. In fact, he may be able to choose some interesting combinations such as CS and Philosophy and then go into AI. Just one option.
@milindks while the GPA is lower end for CSE if those ACT category scores are correct then his composite might be even higher than you show. good luck!
Just getting back to this reply @JBStillFlying …spent the 25th- 27th in Minneapolis…more fun to visit our son with our new “Gopher” She is a Computer Science major and was accepted into CLA. She knew it would be a stretch for CSE. She wants to double major in Spanish - so think CLA will be her best route.
@JBStillFlying (or anyone else who knows) I have a question: I applied for two majors, both under the college of science and engineering back in August (like an idiot). My first choice major was a B.S. in Computer Science, which is also offered as a B.A. in the CLA. Does anyone know if they would automatically consider me for the B.A. in computer science even if I didn’t explicitly list it as my second choice? I called admissions and they said that my second choice was a B.A. in CS which I know for a fact I didn’t list on my application.
No, still waiting. That is indeed what happened. Hopefully I find out soon, I would hate to wait another month (especially considering I applied in late August)
Sort of weighted, but my school does not weight honors courses and I have only taken three APs. I don’t know what my unweighted is because my school only reports the weighted.
@huey99 you can compute from the letter grade. A is 4, A- is 3.67, B+ is 3.33, B is 3.0, etc. you will have a very good idea of what UMN sees for your GPA if you “unweight” it.
@JBStillFlying Do you know if they recalculate in a situation where the high school does not have +'s? At my son’s school, an A- is a 3.5 and a B is a 3.0, etc. if they recalculate on the scale above, it seems like my son’s gpa would go up.
@uwalummom I can’t say for sure what scale they use specifically but they are going to convert everyone to the same scale for comparison purposes. This would also allow them to use their own weighting system for honors and AP etc. I wouldn’t worry too much if your school scales differently. It’s helpful to use the standard 4.0 scale just because the large majority of posters on cc use that so it allows you to know where you stand compared to them.
I applied for CSE (chemical engineer) - he applied on Dec 15th and I have not heard anything yet
Here my stat:
New SAT: 1410 (800 in math)
SATII: 800 in Chemistry, 710 in Math
GPA (unweighted) : 3.8/4 (top 10%)
1 second place and 2 third place in chemistry(national academic competition and Intel ISEF), several awards in chemistry (national and regional competition)
3 researchs in biochemistry and material science
Several extracurricular activities
Applied from Vietnam
I wonder if I have a change for the admission and the merit scholarship. Chance me, please. Thank you very much!!
@st1998, you have very good stats. Is the 610 EBRW enough to waive the TOEFL or do you need to submit that as well?
They appear to be still admitting kids from the Priority (11/1) pool. Have they started looking at Regular Deadline applicants yet? Anyone in that pool please post when you receive a decision - thanks!
Hey JBStillFlying we talked about my D missing out on admit to CBS but got into CLA. I found out she has a 3.76 uw but her class rank is 70% out off 270 students.
Tough school…tough competition to get a high rank, I guess.
