UMN is trying to get to $35K in 2020. They are capping tuition increases for current students at 5.5%. That should tell you planned increases will be higher than that. 7-10% is a good estimate, you can do your own math how to get from $24K (current academic year) to $35K. Additionally, OneStop is telling you your kid will not be protected from tuition increases.
Ok, thanks. $21k would have been incredible! My D is accepted their for ChemE which has off the charts ranking. But overall the school’s ranking is good but not great. And the OOS tuition is now $26k with 71st national ranking from USNWR. Purdue is ranked 60 with OOS $29k. UW-Mad is ranked 44 with OOS $35k. U-Mich is 27 with OOS $46k. Currently the costs look comparable vs rankings.
If UMN were ranked just on CSE, CSOM, and CBS it would have a much higher ranking. And those schools/colleges have a much better faculty / student ratio.
Last year I asked a CSE professor I know how many of their courses for the undergrads are taught by grad students as opposed to faculty. He pretended to count on his fingers and add up the number in his head, then said “that would be, exactly, Zero.” For sure grad students run the TA sessions but you want your lectures to be run by faculty whenever possible. The prospect of not seeing a faculty member till well into your major would naturally pull down the rankings among HS counselors, etc.
Let me give you an example why I say UMN was grossly under-priced for OOS students.
The value of National scholarship offered to my son 2 years ago was $7,250. The letter stated that the value of this scholarship will increase in the future, as it is full OOS tuition waiver.
Now think about it - how many schools charge $14K IS and $21K OOS? The spread is generally about $20K, while some schools now approach $30K mark. The $7K clearly was an anomaly that wasn’t going to last.
Also, forget USNWR overall rankings for now, and think about CSE specifically. Where else could your kid get ChE or ME degree for $21K as an OOS student? And these are top ranked programs in the country! So what happened is that admission to CSE got so competitive that now it’s as hard (or even harder) to get admitted as it is at Purdue or UW. And it’s getting tougher every year, just look at statistics of incoming CSE class every year.
No doubt. CSE is good and it is really bargain in a few years ago. But it will get expensive in the future. I received cost of attendance estimates total is $40,290 for OOS. $26,888 is tuition for 2017-2018.
So it appears that they might have been super harsh on the initial waitlisting this year, since they are able to change up some applicants this early on as people drop out. Very good news for some!
@tallgrass I didn’t see your update until just now. Thanks for that link. Yes, all signs point to massive increases for OOS tuition. This reminds me of Wisonsin 4 years ago when tuition was $10k less than it is now. Purdue just announced they are freezing their OOS tuition at $28,800 for another 2 years.
I’ll be sure to share your link in my response to the admissions team when I request an appointment with an adviser for our upcoming visit.

@amarz12 when do waitlist decisions come out? it says i’ll receive an email update on the status of my application by April 15, but I don’t know if this means i’ll know by then.
