Hey guys,
Is UMTYMP at U of Minnesota really worth it? I am asking this on part of my little brother who has gotten into the program, but would have to drive almost 3 hours to and from UMTYMP each week.
As someone who did not have the opportunity to partake in UMTYMP, I personally have no experience in how beneficial this program is. To any parents of/current/alumni of UMTYP, I have a few questions:
- How does UMTYP look on a college resume? After some reading, it seems like colleges look at it like a EC? Does anyone who has been in it before know how good it is for college admission in a higher ranked school?
- Can my LB get a similar education going through the excelled math's program at our school? (for me it was ADV. Geometery, ADV. Algebra 2, Pre-Calc, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, Self-study/PSEO)
- And Ultimately, is the trade-off of wasting every thursday afternoon worth it? This would not only mean that my LB can no longer participate in many of his ECs such as Basketball, Track, Speech, and Knowledge bowl, but also my mother would also have to take half-a-day off each thursday for the program.
If anybody who is familiar with this program can give some insight in how beneficial (or not) this program is, the input would be GREATLY appreciated, as our family is very divided in this matter (some think that it is 100% worth it since the people they knew in the program got into colleges such as MIT, Stanford and Princeton, while I think they probably had other great ECs and that UMTYMP would negate his chances by taking up too much of his energy and commitment for his ECs).
Edit: not sure if this is in the right category, if not, please move it TIA!
