UNC 2017 Transfer Student Thread

Hi, everyone!!

First off, just wanted to say good luck to all! I’m sure that we each deserve it!

I applied last year and was denied, i knew it was a straight shot being that i only had a semester of college under my belt and that my high school wasn’t the best! But, i transferred to another university that has much better credentials and i’ve done well, so i decided to apply to transfer again.

College GPA: 3.39- transferred so the gpa started over (2 A’s, 1 A-, 2 B’s, 1 B-) i’ll have 56 credit hours at the end of this semester: exercise science major and spanish minor
EC’s: student government, numerous volunteering hours at clinics, pre- PA club, spanish translator, numerous leadership positions in committees.
Hooks: first gen student, hispanic
No LORs, didn’t know any of my professors enough to ask for a stellar letter
Essays: really strong- talked about my path and how it hasn’t been bump free but every bump i’ve endured, i’ve embraced and allowed it help me grow academically and personally. other essay was about how i ran a 5k and basically got smoked by a 7 year old and how i was inspired by their attitude and grace through a stressful time (thought the college admissions would want some humor lol) and other essay was on how i believe the ocean project will be the best breakthrough considering it would only take them 10 years to clean up half of our polluted oceans.

Hopefully it’ll be a positive turn out this time around!!!

Hey @hopefulapp43 sounds like you got yourself a great application! Best of luck!

What do you guys think about the significance of essays? I’ve always considered myself a strong writer and was not too concerned about the essay portion. But I showed a transfer counselor (who is writing one of my LOR) my application and she said that the transfer essay I sent was vague and too repetitive. Torturing myself over the fact that it is already sent and I can’t change it. Hopefully my GPA, ECs and supplemental short answers can make up for it :-/

@katherinerose19 What short answers?

never mind. i thought you meant there was a supplement and a short answer

Anyone want to chance me? I’ll chance you back.
-I’m at NYU which is ranked similarly to UNC/has name recognition
-GPA: 3.95
-Dean’s List for freshman year (this year’s list isn’t out)
-National Merit semifinalist
-Member of the NYU honors program for my school
-Received a $50k 4-year merit scholarship from NYU
-I should have a strong LoR (didn’t read it, but I was really engaged in the professor’s class)
-Strong ECs (a 20 hr/week paid internship at a campaign finance place in DC right now, plus some other ones that are hopefully interesting)
-I self reported my ACT and SAT scores (34 and 2310/2400)
-NC resident
-I’m a strong writer so I’m hoping the supplemental essays were decent, but I completely rewrote one of them a week before turning them in. Maybe 6/8 for those?
-My main essay is the thing I’m agonizing about. My old teacher said it was too negative towards NYU so I rewrote those portions, but I’m also worried because I wrote about some mental health issues I’d had at NYU. I had to because they were integral to why I transferred, but I’m still worried they’ll present a bad image of me.

Also, I got into UNC when I was initially applying to schools but didn’t go there. I don’t know if that’ll hurt my chances.

Thanks! I’m trying to be optimistic, but I’m worried about how much the main essay matters.

@katherinerose19 I’m also worried about my essay, but I think the holistic review means that a strong GPA, ECs, etc should give us a good chance of being accepted

@yoshimax I’m no good at chancing, but if it makes you feel any better, I feel like we are in the same boat in many aspects. The transfer acceptance rate doesn’t seem overly competitive, so I think everyone has a good chance, especially those with nearly perfect GPAs and some decent ECs. I wrote one of my essays about my anxiety disorder, and how commuting to school has made it hard for me to branch out as much as I’d like to. And my main essay was a bit negative as well, I suppose. But when I visited the admissions office, the people there seemed to be the kind of people who will try to look for the good in everything. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

@isuncforme493 Thanks. It sounds like we’re definitely in the same boat. I can’t believe we have to wait two months for the decisions.

hey does anybody know how to check if all the materials were sent in (HS transcripts, college transcripts, college report etc.)? If there is nothing in To-Dos in the UNC portal, does that mean they already received everything?

@johnpfc3 If there’s nothing on the To-Do page then you’re all set! If you sent in a recommendation I have no idea how to tell if it’s been received.

@isuncforme493 thanks for the response. i sent in the recommedation with the common app and it said its downloaded so i guess that would mean its good?

@johnpfc3 Yes then they should have everything.

@yoshimax I think you have a great chance. Mind chancing me?

Is it okay if my transcripts haven’t been sent out yet? I’ll have them sent tomorrow so I’m hoping it’s okay not all of them are

@BryantB02 I’m pretty sure they give several weeks after the deadline to allow people to process their transcripts so you should be fine.

@BryantB02 You have a great chance too I think. Your ECs and GPA are really strong.

@katherinerose19 I am not sure how much is weighted on the essays and or short answers. When I was writing my essay and short answers a writing instructor advised me to paint a picture and be specific. My instructor said schools like to see specific reasons you want to transfer. For example, specific classes, specific instructors, specific campus activities you are interested in and how they with benefit you.

@yoshimax thank you. Your GPA and test scores alone are extremely impressive but with everything altogether you have an excellent shot. I apologize, I didn’t mean for you to have to go back to find my stats haha

Best of luck to you, as well!!! @katherinerose19
