UNC 2018 Transfer Student Thread

@HSstudentNC Just curious and little confused. How come you have 40 credits completed if you are class of 2017 in HS? I believe Class 2017 indicates you only took one semester at you CC?

I took AP classes and dual enrolled college classes when I was in high school. I also took 18 credits this past semester. @UNCISMYDREAM

I’m also applying to App State, UNC-Charlotte and Clemson. @nduclaunc

@HSstudentNC So, are you applying as a sophomore or junior transfer?

They recommended me to apply as a sophomore since I’ve only completed one semester of college work after graduation but will change my status to junior upon completion of my Associates at my CC. So they will see me as a potential junior but I’m technically applying as a sophomore. Sorry if that’s confusing, it’s a little odd to explain. @UNCISMYDREAM

@HSstudentNC emm, gotcha.

I am wondering if someone could advise me of my chance for getting into UNC as a transfer. I am a non-traditional student. I’m 27 years old. I graduated with my AA degree in 2012 from NC community college. My plan is to go to medical school after I get my Bachelor’s Degree. After getting my AA I took 3 years off from college.
My GPA from that college is 3.2. I went back to that college in 2015-2016 to take some basic premed requirements. During that time my GPA was 4.0. Then I went to UNCW from 2016-2017. My gpa was not good that year. I had a major family emergency that went on during that time. My gpa from there was 2.67. My father was in the hospital from Oct until he passed in Feb. Now I am at Hofstra University and my GPA here is a 3.94. I did address this in my personal statement and also taking time off from college. I was planning on staying at Hofstra, but it is incredibly expensive here. And I have 3 strong LOR’s. My EC’s include:

Volunteering at a family practice
Doing cardiology research
Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity
Member of AMSA here at Hofstra.

Also on the Presidents List in 2015 & Dean’s List this past semester at Hofstra
Any insight would be really helpful! Thanks!

@Sjwillis027 Hi, so how many credits have you completed from all the institutions you attended.

@Sjwillis027 And are you NC resident? what was your GPA from last 30 credits?

I am a NC resident and I will be transferring in as a junior.

with how many credits, and what was your GPA in your last two semester.

2015-2016 4.0 on 24 credits
2016-2017 2.66 GPA on 30 credits (This is the year that my father got sick and passed)
2017 3.94 GPA on 18 credit hours and I am taking an additional 18 credits this semester

I’ll be transferring in 60-75 credits depending on what they would accept.

Since UNC prefer junior transfers and in-state students. I think you have a good chance getting in overall. Make sure you well explain your circumstance in the essay, it’s good that you have a research experience related to the major you’re applying.

I think the most of you AA credits will be transferable to UNC… so you should count that more than 60-75 credits

Thanks for the input! I submitted my application a couple days ago. I did explain everything in my personal statement.

Did you explain it in the main common app essay or on the additional information?

I explained it in both. I went into more detail on the additional information. Do you really think I have a chance to get in?

You do have a chance. I’d estimate your overall GPA to be around the 3.4 range based on the information you provided but I’m not sure. The average for Junior transfers is around 3.7. You are a little below average but you explained in your essays the reasons why it’s not higher which is understandable. And it’s not all about GPA obviously. They take into consideration rigor, content and quality of your essays, your recommendation, extracurriculars etc. And as @UNCISMYDREAM mentioned, statistically UNC admits more junior transfers each year than sophomores, so that helps. I guess we’ll all find out on April 7th.

@Sjwillis027 Yes! As I mentioned above, UNC somewhat prefers junior transfers and in-state students. the 2.67 GPA you had will not impact your chance getting a lot since you have explained it very well in the essays. This semester you have a GPA 3.93 which is good and a research related to your major, admissions officers want to see you upward trend which you did.

What else schools did you apply?

I also think you should check the 2017 UNC transfer thread. You can check out the academic profiles of the admitted juniors there and it’ll give you a rough idea of where you stand. I remember seeing a student with a 3.0 college GPA and not many extracurriculars was admitted. @Sjwillis027
