Hi! I’m in IB 11 right now, and want to go to UNC. I’m worried that I won’t because of my grades. I’ve taken all honors courses throughout high school with all A’s. Before this year, my GPA was 4.25. I’ve continued making all A’s, except I think I might make a B in SL math. I feel like this would lower the chances of me getting in by a lot. I’m taking the ACT and SAT by the end of the month. I don’t play sports anymore because of school, but am actively involved in the community and school. I’m currently first in my class (tied with maybe 5 people), but that will obviously change if I do end up making a B in this class. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but to me a B is like a failing grade considering I’ve never made one before. Do you think I would still have a good change of getting in? I’m in-state.
Look at their Common Data Set. They value test scores, essay, and recommendations slightly more than Academic GPA.
I don’t think one B will be a deal breaker.

Part of growing up is learning that sometimes you won’t always get perfect grades, or perfect outcomes, or always “win”, however you define that. You can use this as an opportunity to learn how to handle it and move on in a positive way. It will be a valuable skill in life.
Yes, take a deep breath, relax, one B won’t have an impact. Grades are obviously important. You’ve done very well. So that’s great. Getting to know yourself, figuring out what excites you, what motivates you, and what kind of people make you a better person . . . these things are much more important than any particular grade. Good luck!
Just because a B feels like a failing grade to you doesn’t mean it actually is a fail grade to anyone else. To everyone else, it’s a B.
