I am considering unc-ch but i like a school with diversity, and where students are very welcoming. i am african-american and i don't want to feel out of place, is unc-ch a good choice? i live in northern VA (DMV area) and majority is the black population where i'm from

From 2008, but I don’t think the numbers have changed much. Around 10% African Americans.

from visiting and talking to many current students I have heard that it is a very welcoming and friendly place. But a current student could go into much more detail than me.

Here’s my two cents. I’m a minority, Indian to be exact, and I grew up in the deep South. Now there are still the occasional headcases back home that won’t talk to me because I’m not white, but for the most part, the people down here are some of the most welcoming and friendly people that you will meet anywhere. And everyone at UNC is pretty much the exactly the same way. I really don’t think you will feel out of place at UNC. I got there and honestly it was just like being back home in terms of friendliness.

I know my situation is a little different from yours since I have always been a minority, but I can’t think of anyone I know at UNC that felt out of place or isolated because of their race at UNC. And as far as diversity goes, you’ll have a hard time finding a university more diverse than Blue Heaven.

I just went to CTOPS and I felt that it was a pretty welcoming/ friendly crowd as packerfan said (I’m black as well btw). Though this is only my second time on campus, so you might take my opinion with a grain of salt

UNC-CH has a pretty friendly and polite student body (maybe it’s because of the southern hospitality). You really won’t feel alienated.
