UNC-CH is a safety for me, right?

Sorry, I know these get old but thanks to everyone who offers an opinion. I am applying EARLY ACTION and wanted to know if I am pretty much a lock and could use UNC-CH as my safety?

Essays should be good. Call it B+ to be safe. Have gotten advice from many on here and think they ended up ok.

Teacher-Recs: Should be amazing. Both my teachers were thrilled and flattered at the opportunity to write them for me.

Counselor Rec: Should be ok. Im one of the few students she knows, being at a large public school.

Thanks again to any that offer an opinion! I know UNC-CH is a tough school to get into and everything, but im hoping that being in-state, its pretty much a safety for me!

While I think you have a solid resume, from the many surprises I’ve seen over the past few years, I can not say that you can call Carolina a “safety”. I really don’t think hardly anyone, in-state or out, can. Let me give a few examples: In my D’s class: 2007, average NC high school, class size was around 370 in the fall of 2006 (it dropped by grad. day). The #4 in the class, applied EA and was deferred. She was later denied, RD. White female. Amazing EC’s w/ lots of leadership..One of those type kids who really stand out. Lots of awards. Good AP’s, solid SAT’s, she and my D, I know, received the best teacher-recs of the whole class. VEry popular girl, loved by students and teachers. She had thought she’d have no problem getting in, and had never even looked at other schools. She ended up winning several merit based scholarships, local and other. She’s at Clemson, doing well.
Another example: One of my H’s best friends from his days at Carolina, has a Masters from Carolina, his wife graduated top of her class from Carolina. They are big long time supporters of the university. Their son, (white) 2008 HS grad., large, competitive NC high school, #3 in the class. Eagle scout, tons of volunteer hours, leadership, HS does IB, not AP. Even a bit higher SAT scores than my D, who is a Carolina scholar and Honors. He applied EA, been wearing Carolina Blue since he was born, and never thought of applying anywhere else. EA defered. RD waitlisted! He finally received a phone call from Carolina in late July! He’s there and loving it. His parents are relieved but wondering what the heck his younger brother needs to do to assure he’ll get in???
I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. Yes, I think you are likely to get in Carolina, but is Carolina a safety for you? No.
Always have a back-up plan.
Best Wishes!

Not a safety. Someone on these boards was rejected from UNC instate and accepted to Georgetown.

safety. UNC in-state acceptance rate is somewhere near 50 percent. unless you make racist/non-diverse comments in your essay or admissions has some sort of strange quota on your high school/county, you are in.

Safety. Yes, UNC gets tougher every year, but contrary to a lot of the hype on this board, it’s still not all that difficult an admit from in-state. I mean let’s be honest, it’s not like getting into an ivy. Out of state, on the other hand, is a different story.

Odds are, you’ll be fine. I know plenty of (in-state) people who have stats that are not as impressive as yours and who got in with little difficulty… but I think almost everyone from my high school who is here has a least one friend (also in-state) who was that “shoo-in” that wound up deferred, wait listed, or flat-out rejected. It’s your choice to make, but just be aware that occasionally the unlikely does happen.
