Does anyone know what it takes to get into UNC Chapel Hill as an out of state student (GPA, SAT, etc.)?
Yes, at least five AP (or DE or IB) classes and a high UW GPA: http://endeavors.unc.edu/more_ap_classes_may_not_be_better
Does your HS have naviance?
You should have a strong gpa, course rigor, and high (or high enough) test scores. Nobody can really tell you how high these numbers should be…you should ask your guidance counselor what your school’s history is with regard to acceptances.
It takes more than high stats to get accepted. In my opinion they are also looking for students who will fit in with the culture of the school. This is demonstrated through your essays and activities etc. I also know of OOS students with relatively “low” scores, but they had other things in their application to offset this.
Yes, we do, but none of our school’s data has been added yet.
I believe UNC caps out of state freshman enrollment at 18% so it is a tough admit.
The year that my D applied there were 25,000 OOS applicants and 10,000 instate applicants. There is an 18% cap on OOS students. I would consider this school to be a reach for anybody OOS, and they should craft a list accordingly. Good luck!
This is a school that meets full need based on your Fafsa EFC…despite also requiring the profile.
What is your schools history with UNC…in terms of acceptances? Do you have Naviance? Nobody can chance you, and coming from NY it will be a big reach, but I would apply if you want as one of your reach schools…and spend a lot of time on your essays. Watch the YouTube videos on UNCs essays.
We probably need more information than that. While your test scores are good, and you are a member of student government, why would UNC business take you? Do you have your own business or do you do FBLA? Or even what APs you took and what. the scores are because the school is not going to love something like Art History but would probably look highly on a 5 in AP macroeconomics and microeconomics
I do have Naviance but the information isn’t plugged in yet. But from what I’ve heard very few students have applied there from my school, maybe one or two per year, max. And I don’t own a business and I am not part of FBLA. I have taken AP calculus, Lang, us history, and euro, and am taking macro, lot, and hug next year. I don’t really have much of a business background but am hoping that won’t hurt me too much. I do have some extracurriculars in finance and some positions in my school that are related to finance, which should help. What else would you like to know?
You don’t have to own a business to get into the business school. Spend time on your essays, get a feel for what the school is all about, put together the best application you can…and apply if you want.
Yeah, thanks, I figured that. But what do you think my chances are? I know the acceptance rate is about 18% for out of state students BTW. So probably a major reach right.?
Many schools (not all) that meet full need are going to be a reach. We can’t chance you. Your stats seem good…you need to spend time on your essays and the other parts of your application. UNC has other essays in addition to the common app. Don’t take them lightly…spend the time.
I definitely will. Being their EA deadline is Oct. 15th, when should I get started on those supplements?
The common app opens August 1 (?). I would research the common app essays now and start writing. I would begin the school specific essays as soon as you find out what they are. You may have a lot to write, the process is time consuming, and UNC takes the essays seriously.
Sounds good.
Live in New York, 1510 SAT, 4.0/99% GPA, 7 AP classes, member of Student Gov., captain of baseball team, won several city and state awards, coordinated blood drive, worked at a summer camp for two years, average rec. letters, very good essay. Looking to apply to the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at UNC Chapel Hill.
Top of your class, pretty much perfect grades, top test scores. Diversity, well roundedness, extra curriculars, community service, officer in clubs, having some sort of hook–first generation, story, ethnicity, complexity in life are added bonuses.
