UNC Chapel Hill EA Applicants 2018

To those who have applied,

When you log in to the UNC portal, what information does it have listed about you? All I have are my scores and nothing under activities / awards.

yeah, mine only has my score and my intended major. nothing under award/activity.

My portal doesnt even show anything. You go to ConnectUNC or w.e. right?

i think it was ConnectUNC but i am 100 percent sure

i am not 100 percent sure

I just found it all…connectcarolina…and also, is the major that we put down for intended study what we HAVE to go into if we’re accepted?

The new website is connectcarolina and nope you do not have to go into what you put on the application! I’ve changed my major a couple times.

Ok cool. I just chose the major that I thought best matched my application. I might not want to go into that though.

We did apply EA & he has met the school reps when they came to his high school recently. He wil be visiting the campus for a scheduled tour on Monday.

He only took the ACT and SAT a single time each but scored decent with 29 & 1920 respectively. But he took both of those relatively early in his junior year (I believe) and we believe that if he went back and re-took the math portion again, he could likely be in the 2,100-2,220 range.

The issue is that his weighted GPA is only a 3.61. Although he only has one class left to meet college requirements, he has a full class schedule and about 25% of those are AP classes (Calculus & Art). Nothing else is really available for him to take so his GPA will likely rise a bit (~3.85) as long as he continues to get mostly A’s and a few B’s here or there. His school is one of the stronger ones in the state so it appears that his current 3.61 is more like a 3.8 or 3.9 from other NC high schools.

He is into Japanese and Asian studies and has been taking Japanese language lessons outside of school on a weekly basis for the past 3 years from a prior UNC Chapel Hill graduate. Does UNC “need” Japanese foreign language students which might give him an edge?

We are in state and would like to get some academic scholarships but we are also able to pay without any loans if nothing is offered. Neither my wife or I or anyone in our immediate of distant relatives have every spoken Japanese so this is all him.

What are his chances of getting in based on these details?

Does anyone else’s ConnectCarolina account say they are missing documents that should have been uploaded with CommonApp? Mine says my transcript, counselor statement, and teacher recommendations are all missing even though they were submitted with my Common App. Has that info just not come from Common App yet, or is something wrong?

Under my to do list nothing is listed which I am assuming means all my info was received. The interesting thing is that on the Common App it does not say my letter of recommendation was downloaded by UNC but according to ConnectCarolina they have it. I am going to call on Monday just to check

^ ndabunka - Just being honest, I’d say UNC is a reach school for your son. My son applied last year and did not get accepted, and had similar stats … slightly lower on the test scores (SAT 1850 / ACT 28) but higher on the GPA (UW 3.5, W 3.96). Plus, he had 3 legacy alumni, was a member of the NHS, an Eagle Scout, varsity swim team, and one of the more competitive schools in Wake County (in state).

That said, it never hurts to try. My son goes to Univ. of South Carolina now on a merit scholarship with in state tuition and loves it. I’m still following this forum because now my daughter applied to UNC for EA so hopefully she’ll get accepted. Unfortunately, UNC is not her first choice but we’re hoping she’ll change her mind. :)

@coleman

If I am understanding correctly, you live in South carolina? Out of state acceptance is much more difficult than In-state. I say your son has a strong chance ndabunka

@ johnston - No I am instate for NC (Wake County) … My son is going out of state to Univ. of South Carolina since he did not get accepted to UNC. His merit scholarship for USC is for out of state students (since he is from NC, he is out of state for SC).

For what it’s worth, I disagree with “strong” chance for ndabunka based on his W-GPA of 3.6 and test scores of ACT 29 and ACT of 1920. Just by the numbers, he barely falls within the 50% profile on the test scores and not even close for the GPA. That’s why I said it is a reach school.

UNC’s 50% profile:
GPA- 4.5 GPA,
SAT - 1935 (CR 590-700, MA 620-630, WR 635)
ACT - 28-32

What do ya’ll think about my chances?
