UNC Chapel Hill OOS chances and what schools are similar?

How much does having a parent legacy affect my chances of getting in? W GPA: 3.9
ACT: should be 28ish
I know my grades are not great for an oos applicant, considering I will have taken 1 AP and 1 honors by the time I graduate high school, but UNC is my dream school and I think I can write really strong essays and I know I will have good recs. I also have good ECs but they are not education based. I work heavily with children but they are not academic programs at all.
Assuming I don't get into UNC, what schools have a similar vibe of school spirit, intellectual students, and a great college town nearby?
Thanks for helping!!

University of Georgia has a UNC vibe in terms of school spirit and amazing town but is significantly easier to get into. Texas AM is another great college town with great programs that you could probably get into. Even look at University of Wisconsin for great college town, academics, and school spirit all in one. UNC OOS is a stretch for pretty much every applicant and you seem strong but your test scores are on the lower end and most applicants have probably taken a more rigorous schedule.

Thank you! So does that mean I should just cross UNC off my list? And does being a legacy matter at all?

No don’t cross it off the list if it is your dream. Your scores are low but admission is hollistic so you could catch their eye in another area. Know that getting into UNC OOS is extremely competitive, but you might as well apply if it your dream! I think legacy does matter and the acceptance rate is significantly higher for legacy so you never really know. I’ve read that the acceptance rate is double for OOS legacy, though this figure is still like 35-40% so still low. Who knows. i hope it all works out!
