General Comments: Words cannot describe how delighted I am to have received that acceptance letter
UNC was one of my top choices and I absolutely fell in love with the university while touring the campus. I’m still waiting to hear from a few colleges, but I’ve got a really good feeling about Carolina and think it would be a really great fit for me!

I have a 4.0 unweighted. However, on the ACT score report it did say the range for UNC is 26-31.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I wrote a really personal essay that reflected well of me.
General Comments: GDTBATH! Really try and show who you are in your application! They don’t necessarily look for the smartest, they look to create a unique class. Find the thing that makes you stand out ( activity, award, hobby, idea, etc) and extenuate this throughout your application. If you try to be what you think they want ( ie top student) you may come off as boring, there will be several applications like this, so they will probably not pick a group of students who ll sound similar. Make yourself distinct. Also, if for some reason there is a dip in the grades for a valid reason, explain this. I had mostly all A’s up until by junior year when my twin brother became very sick. He was hospitalized for almost 2 months, during this time I missed a lot of school because I was at the hospital. I explained this in my application. I got deferred EA, i think partially due to the dip in grades, so I turned in my mid-years which were all A’s and 1 B (92 in AP Bio-grrr) so i think this helped show the type of student I am.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, international experience

Strengths: SAT, URM, being a manager really helped
Weaknesses: GPA, ecs, having a C in IB math junior year
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I am surprised to have gotten off wait list due to the slim chances once put on the wait list (only about 50 out of state students offered admission from wait list) . Never really even thought about it until I got a letter in the mail saying I had been accepted. I feel that if I had not gotten a C in IB math SL my junior year I would’ve been accepted without being put on wait list.
General Comments: Nice to have been accepted but will probably not make sense to go to UNC cost wise given my acceptance to UVA. I posted this to give people in the future hope that it is possible to get off the waitlist at a prestigious school like UNC but you shouldn’t think about everyday. I did not send a single letter or make a single call just be patient and expect the worst but hope for the best.

Essays: Pretty good, I guess? CommonApp essay was on my struggles with peer pressure. Supplement was on my 3 families (my biological family, my friends, and my church) and how they encouraged me to pursue my dreams and stay true to myself. (Sorry for the cheesiness.)
Teacher Recommendation: Never got to see them. I assume they were good?
Counselor Rec: Ditto.
Additional Rec: Same. I asked my research mentor to write me one.
State: Louisiana
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I suppose the research?

Strengths: GPA, ACT score, essays, research experience, course load

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Strong academics.
General Comments: I ultimately turned down UNC (attending Emory this fall) because I thought it wasn’t the best fit and I didn’t get financial aid, but good luck to any future applicants!
