UNC Class of 2020 EA Discussion Thread

Thanks @anon145. Do you happen to know if emails containing scholarship info also went to common app email?

Got the emails as well. Now I have more data to sort through to make a decision on where to go. Fortunate and lucky, but I can’t wait for all decision info to be received so I can make a decision in April.

I spoke to a very, very reliable source at Carolina this afternoon about scholarship notifications. It is safe to say that all EA merit scholarship recipients have been notified. He said they would be announcing some more come March, but that would be for the RD round.

Well…it was worth a shot. S accepted OOS, but will likely decline without scholarship offer. Bummer, because he so loved it when he toured. Great offers elsewhere, so perhaps it is time that we lay this dream to rest.

@minmamma from the applicants I know that get full scholarships they generally also get into ivy leagues. And in state folks who don’t make morehead finalists get into HYPS schools so it’s super competitive.

My D got an explore Carolina email the day after acceptance. Did anyone who got an excel@carolina email get the explore Carolina email too? Just wondering if we should stop waiting for honors invitation?

So there’s no scholarship day like there was last year? No chance of me getting merit scholarship as an OOS?

@CTigerMom the explore carolina is an email that goes to every applicant, the excel is the “honors” college one that goes to a small subset. There is a big misconception at UNC since many departments offer zero honors classes and you do not get early registration at UNC honors college. It’s a nice perk but really not that impactful and many drop out of it simply because there aren’t enough class offerings… one undergrad said she didn’t “have time to take random classes not toward the major or general eds”… apparently they now have ways of making non-honors classes into an honors requirement since so many people were dropping out http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2015/03/honors-college-0331

to clarify you get priority registration but only for honors classes. but nothing special for the regular courses. and many departments don’t offer a single course through honors, others you have to perfectly match your timing with when it is offered.

As far the ExploreCarolina days - how valuable/interesting would this be for a student that’s done the standard on-campus tour and is pretty sure (probably 99%) she wants to attend?

My daughter can only miss a day or two of class and still be exempt from finals. At least one of days will be for a concert, which is probably a better use of a day to play hooky.

Insight from someone that has attended these in the past would be appreciated…

Has anyone received an acceptance letter in the mail yet or know if we will be receiving one? I was accepted and was just wondering if they would send something out or if they were just posting decisions online this year

Strengths- Extracurriculars and essay, 10 AP classes after graduation, honestly think that my essays and extracurriculars saved me
Weaknesses: GPA, Rank, test scores
Why I think I got deferred: Competition is high, and my scores and GPA are at their bare minimum.

I’ve been dreaming of going to UNC since I was little, and getting deferred was pretty hard. I am hoping for the best (fingers crossed!), I’m just grateful that they’re giving me another chance instead of straight up rejecting me! I was accepted into NCSU, APP, UNCW, and ECU Honors College. I know competition is super steep so I am not expecting to get in RD, but you never know! And to all of the others who also got deferred, WE GOT THIS! Let’s all think positively and hope for everything to turn out for the best!

When will we get an email telling us how to report our mid year grades?

wow “Nearly half are ranked in the top 10 students of their high school class.” of accepted students

@ClassOf2020x my son got an email today telling him how

Does anyone have any idea of how many finalist their are for the unc chancellors science scholars program. I know they choose 30-40 scholars out the finalist, but how many finalist are their.
