@CollegeBound1325 , I suspect you are correct. Anyhow, it’s pointless to worry about it.
i also had that impression when i visited. They told me that rigor was more important than gpa itself – so long as you are getting solid grades in challenging classes they wont look too deeply into gpa. Also it was my impression that the email was only sent to people applying for certain programs and majors but i could be wrong
About the excel email- I’m a longtime independent counselor in NC and since the excel survey on the Common Application is new this year for UNC please don’t read anything into whether or not you received an email, it’s a new process. Also UNC really does have a thoughtful process about admissions and rest assured your application is deeply concerned with no set numbers/requirements. Good Luck to you all! No more than 2 to 21/2 weeks left to decisions- you will get an email about 24 hours before decisions are released with instructions on how to see them into ConnectCarolina.
@CollegeBound1325 I don’t know if this is the case - there are also many people with great stats that received the email.
@adp106 That’s exactly my point. There are great stats kids who received an email and there are those that didn’t. I don’t know what conclusions can be drawn from it so I’m not really worrying about it.
@CollegeBound1325 Agreed. I find this whole email situation odd.
@NCMOM24 The only worry I have is that I come from a small school and am in the most competitive class it has seen maybe ever. All top ten students have great stats (for in-state at least - all over 4.5 weighted GPAs and 28 or higher on ACT). I was wondering whether or not UNC would accept some and not others in order to diversify the schools they take from? I would say the top 10 at my school are all safe bets to get accepted (in-state, again) but someone brought this point up to me and I’m a little curious about it.
@adp106 how many students are in your senior class?
@Joe2015 roughly 250 or so
My money is on the release of decisions the afternoon of Thursday January 26.
@DevilStick What makes you say that?
@adp106 – @DevilStick is probably basing it on decisions being released on Jan 28 the last two years and Jan 26 being the last Thursday of the month. I’m sure it’s just a guess. In Jan 2015, decisions were released on Jan 28 which was a Wednesday.
@adp106 Do not worry about diversification of schools. UNC accepts very high percentages from some schools.
@paveyourpath I’m just concerned with the size of my school. Typically bigger and more established colleges tend to stray away from taking many students from a smaller school. I’m optimistic about my chances (3rd out of 250 - 4.87W GPA) but the main concern I have is UNC maybe not wanting to take so many students from the school.
@adp106 I understand what your concern is. You shouldn’t worry about school diversification because there are a handful of schools I know of where the senior class is on average 125 students. Each year, at least 80% of the senior class at these schools apply to, and are accepted, at UNC-CH.
My DD applied to 3 programs and received Excel email for just two of them. Does that mean she is not being considered for the third? Also, could you please share inputs on Honors Carolina vs Carolina Research Scholar Program? How do they each stand out - anyone has more information than what we can read from the website?
@Mom22DDs I would definitely suggest putting the research program above Honors Carolina. Students are able to apply to the honors college later, but cannot apply to research later.
Thank you for that tip @caligrl14567 !! DD has already ranked the research program higher and was wondering if it was terrible if she missed out on the honors college and the ability to register early and live in Honors dorms. I’ll pass on this tip to her.
@paveyourpath Are these schools with good reputations or…?
@Mom22DDs It most likely means that the third program does not require additional information for their selection criteria.
