I know my test scores are low but do you think I could get into UNC?
@breakfeastclub1234567890 Being a first gen URM helps, on top the fact that you’re in-state and did project uplift. If your writing and recs are good, I think you should be in fine shape. Let me ask are you a male or female? If you are a male, I think you’re definitely in. Still strong chance if you’re female though.

Strengths: GPA, strong ACT score (for in-state), I think personally my essays are really good, I was able to demonstrate my passion for music and I think that’s what put me over the top if my scores/essays hadn’t yet.
Weaknesses: Not a whole lot of AP classes because block schedule at my school made me take overall less courses as well as presenting conflicts between certain AP classes that I could only take as an upperclassmen due to prerequisites. However, my senior year did not have any conflicts because I now have all of my prerequisites so all of my classes are AP classes (except for psychology).
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA, test scores, essays, demonstrated passion for music.
General Comments: It has been so much fun interacting with everybody on this forum. Witnessing people freaking out as much as me was relieving and provided some comfort in the uncertain times. It is amazing to see some of the people I’ve seen posting since October finally getting their dreams realized. It’s also great to see the attitude of those who did not get in, as they are all brilliant students as well who will strive in any setting. I look forward to trying to aid next year’s class through this process now that I have a bit of understanding on it and I hope I can be active in admissions throughout my time at UNC. THANK YOU EVERYBODY!
Alright people, rate me here.
ACT - 32 (composite)
GPA - Came to the United States in the senior year, but have a 3.6UW and 4.0W GPA for this one semester. Previous grades are good. Have 4 AP’s. That’s the best my current school could offer.
EC - Sports : Won a national 100-meter competition. Avid Quizzer, represented the team and achieved a rank in a national competition. Two time interschool boxing winner. Otherwise, I don’t think I stand out way too much in EC’s.
Essay - I think I wrote a pretty good essay.
FYI, I am counted as an in-state participant in the process.
Thank you so much
@TheBoringKid You’re in-state. With that ACT you’re completely fine.
Any updates on when are they releasing decisions?
No updates that I’ve seen. I’m hoping the snow we’ve gotten in NC doesn’t push back whatever date they had planned to release since they were out of the office for three days.
@hscot7469 I think you are probably in pretty good shape. Coming from Franklin County will help, and there was an article posted earlier that said UNC doesn’t consider more than 5 AP’s in their decision as they have found taking more than 5 doesn’t produce better college results, so you should be good there as well. Essays are big for them. Good luck!
I know you guys don’t really ever tell someone that they don’t have a good chance but please be honest. Brutally honest. What do you think my chances are?

@qdude2022 Lol, in-state AA made is probably the best thing you could be for UNC, especially being accomplished. Your acceptance was already written before they even got to your file. Absolutely nothing to worry about at all there. In there like swimwear.
Those of you sweating about acceptance would do well to get offline until Friday. Sites like these will only increase your stress so go read a book, do your homework, ride a bike, makeout with your sweetie, go to the movies and sneak into at least 1 extra, or play with your toes, but for heaven’s sake don’t worry about what other people say about your chances.
What school do you go to?
@emmab15 What school do you go to
I honestly already am so over the college process… Lol already accepted a rejection and moved on :)>- Now just breathing easy and studying for midterms!
@emmab15 I asked the same question, a few questions prior to yours. I had the doubt only because of GPA and a slight lack of EC’s. I’ll rate you application on a 0-10 scale, with 5 being the pivotal point. If your final average is greater than 5, then you have an above 50% chance. Furthermore, as the final average goes up, your chances also increase.
- GPA - 4.5/10
- SAT - 5.5/10
- EC - 7/10
I won’t rate others as they were filled by you, and I cannot analyze them for you. Finally, add 3 points for in-state and 1 for first-gen.
So you fall around 7.00, which IMHO, is an above par chance.
Notwithstanding, I do not claim to be correct, and your chances could vary wildly. However, other people having more knowledge on this topic than I could use this scale to approximate the chances with a far better accuracy.
Alright so I logged into the portal today and it didn’t fulfill my request, saying “this page is only available to students.” I logged out and logged back in and it was fine. Computer glitch, or telling of a denial? Lol
