UNC Class of 2022 EA Discussion Thread

I applied to ED to BU and RD to Cornell

Are all the decisions released on the same day?.I know some state schools release acceptances in waves, I take it UNC doesn’t?

@lesjubilants From what I understand, all decisions are released at the same time.

So UNC needs mid-term grade once the student is accepted or deferred?

Will a bad SAT subject Math score be a reason for rejection?

@Chipotlegurl28 It depends on your definition of a bad score and your intended major-- I don’t think a bad score will get you rejected but it just won’t help you get accepted.

@Chipotlegurl28 I don’t believe the SAT subject scores even need to be sent. If it doesn’t help you don’t send it.

@Chipotlegurl28 I didn’t see mid-year reports required for UNC. I know final transcripts of course but I don’t believe they ask for mid-year reports at all.

@lesjubilants They would really only release in waves if they were rolling, which they definitely aren’t. Everyone who applied EA should know of their status late January on the ConnectCarolina portal.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but letters to alumni parents of applicants are going out now. I got mine today (OOS and my mom went to UNC). In the letter, it’s stated that UNC plans to accept 40% of OOS legacy applicants this year – thought that might be of interest.

@ls2018 Did it say if that 40% was for EA or overall?

@burghdad It doesn’t say for sure. Here’s exactly what it says in the letter: “If last year is any indication, this year we expect to offer admission to roughly 40 percent of out-of-state alumni candidates, compared to 15 percent of other non-resident candidates.” To me, it sounds like they mean it in the overall sense (I feel like they would’ve mentioned these stats being for EA otherwise), but I’m not certain.

@ls2018 Yes that sounds like they are referring to over all. Unfortunately for my OOS daughter with no legacy she is down to the 15%. Add in no other hooks like first family member to college etc I sure its probably more like 10%. Looks like we will doing lots of this until the end of Jan.

Good luck to you. BTW where else are you looking?

@burghdad Yeah, it’s unfortunate that they have to be so picky, but I understand it’s what the state legislature wants. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your daughter! I’ve been accepted to Bama and UMW; waiting to hear back from Tulane and Virginia Tech, and I’m working on an RD app to UVA as well (I’m a VA student, so happy to have lots of great options here too).

@ls2018 That legacy news is very surprising. I know someone from my school who was an OOS Legacy, 35 ACT and good extracurriculars that got rejected last year. OOS is just so brutal I can’t even comprehend why the state even requires around 80 percent of all applicants come from the state of North Carolina. Really missing out on incredible individuals.

@Is2018: The 40% acceptance rate for OOS legacies is consistent with what it has been for the past few admissions cycles.

@Pastpower: The State of North Carolina requires that at least 82% of UNC’s entering first-year class come from North Carolina because the University is funded in part by taxes paid by North Carolina citizens/voters. The members of the NC General Assembly aren’t under any obligation to accommodate OOS citizens; their first duty is to the people who elected them, which they are fulfilling by giving the children of North Carolina citizens the largest number of opportunities to attend this amazing university.

@ls2018 Did you get Bama honors? It sounds like Virgina resident you should get uva as well. Why not early action to uva as well as unc?

Good luck In whatever you decide

@burghdad Yes, I did! Thank you! I decided not to apply early action to UVA because it’s more of my dad’s dream for me, not my own; it’s a wonderful school and I know many acquaintances who are happy there, but I just don’t believe it’s the best environment for me personally. I wanted to take the time to focus first on the schools I’m passionate about, if that makes any sense (and I hope it doesn’t come off as dismissive – like I said, UVA is great and I would be lucky to get in there, I just don’t feel it’s a great fit for me).

@ls2018 Congrats on merit money ar Bama and absolutely follow your heart. As a dad believe me although yours he may express a presence for one school or an other I have no doubt he wants you to be happy and go to a school that will make you happy.

May you get accepted to what ever school you want to go too.

@burghdad Thank you so much. I hope your daughter gets to go to the school of her dreams, too!
