No, I’m talking about the excel@Carolina opportunities. I wasn’t even selected for Honors Carolina, which apparently 25% of the incoming class is selected for…
It just seems like UNC isn’t really making an effort for me to want to go there, haha. I have Ivy level stats and extracurriculars, so it’s a little disheartening that I’m not being recognized at all at UNC, especially for the one thing that I wanted (assured admission to EURO-TAM). I’ve received full rides from three other state schools (lower ranked, but still reputable) so maybe I’m just not used to being treated like everyone else. Either way, UNC probably won’t be worth it for me without EURO-TAM.
@anxiouswreck
I was hoping my son would too @lesjubilants. He’s OSS, from NY. 34 ACT, 101+ GPA, 2 sports, lots of ECs and volunteer work.
Hoping something comes through for both of you.
@lesjubilants: “I’m just not used to being treated like everyone else.” You actually have been treated better than the 86% of OOS applicants who will be denied admission to UNC-CH (based on last year’s OOS acceptance rate of 14%).
The OOS pool at UNC-CH is both wide and deep.
If your email says you got Carolina research scholar program only, does that mean you were not accepted for assured admission to Kenan-Flagler? Anyone know how selective/prestigious the research program is? Also, how hard is it to get into the business school without assured admission?
My daughter received her first choice which was The Journalism School. It’s bee a good day for her. Carolina Scholar and The J School. Congrats to everyone. Well deserved.
Less than 7% of Freshmen receive ANY type of merit scholarship. It’s a pretty big deal you guys. You should be very proud and excited.
@lesjubilants – Are you sure 25% of admits are offered Honors Carolina? That seems high based on ending up with 400 out of 4000 in the program. I can see they offer more than the 10% b/c not all end up at Carolina – but 25% seems high. Curious where you got that number?
Also, a quick note that there are many, many high achieving IS kids that UNC is trying recruit because those students have other options both in state and out of state. Since UNC is required to have 82% IS kids – they want to entice very strong ones from within that segment, so to speak, to pick UNC. This is one reason OOS admits with stellar stats don’t get all the Excel slots
Fairly certain it’s on the Honors Carolina webpage. 20-25% of incoming freshman class @AlmostThere2018
Is the Excel @ Carolina program separate from the UNC Scholars program?
i saw that someone earlier on this thread said they spoke with admissions this morning and said all scholarships are done, but unc just responded to my email two hours ago and said “merit-based awards will be coming out later this week” so i don’t know…guess we should just assume they’re already all done?
@lesjubilants – I’d have to see the link; I just checked Honors website again and didn’t see it. Anyway, good luck and congrats on your admission!
I’ve just come from visiting the Honors Carolina webpage. While it mentions the metrics most of those invited have, it doesn’t indicate a percentage of how many incoming freshman are given a spot. At this point, just happy my D will be a member of the class of 2022!
I don’t think it’s 25%. On the excel website it states that opportunities are offered to only about 10% of admitted students. There are 14 opportunities, so honors has to be less than 25%. Many students, like my son, are offered one but not honors.
@skipper99 Hmm, I would trust the email from admissions itself. Looks like those of us who haven’t heard anything yet can keep our hopes up!
Sorry guys, 20-25% of incoming freshmen are offered an excel@Carolina opportunity. My bad!
Still, looking at the average stats for Honors Carolina has me a little salty, not gonna lie. I’m just going to hope that I’m getting an email later this week.
So has anyone heard back from Eshelman as of yet?
^ I was wondering the same thing
So we’re all excel@carolina awards sent out today? Or is there hope that additional awards will be sent out later this week?
@Drifter711 I wouldn’t rule anything out yet unless you heard it directly. I think everyone should just chill out, wait, and see. Give it a week or two and we’ll probably know everything then.
guys i got an email confirming my admission but no scholarship emails? Are they still coming out?
