UNC Class of 2022 EA Discussion Thread

@berkeley101 When did you receive this email? My son has received no emails, but on the portal he has an acceptance.

@berkely101 - it’s unclear re: merit scholarships. Quite a few Carolina Scholars have posted and one Johnston. Haven’t heard from any Robinson or Pogue recipients yet. (Chime in if you’ve gotten notification!) Daughter has not gotten an official acceptance email yet either - just Honors Carolina invite. Good luck!

Is anyone who is applying for financial aid having problems accessing the Verification Worksheet - Dependent Students. The formstack website just won’t work for me and I don’t know if I’m the only one.

@almostthere2018 @appalachymom there is no acceptance email. It is on the portal only.

Did anyone get an email requesting that you report any outside scholarship information?

I did last night at around 8:30

yep. I am guessing it went to everyone who applied for FA.

Was there anything proactive to do to apply for FA other than submit FAFSA and CSS? We did both in the fall but portal does not reflect FA application and did not receive an email last night. Thanks for any guidance. Hope we didn’t mess something up.

@KitBlue – I believe there was there a box to check on the Common App? My daughter was doing it, obviously, but I seem to remember seeing that box checked when in preview mode b4 she submitted. You can look at the pdf of your app to check. Others may know more. . .

Thank you, I already checked that as know it was part of other common applications but do not see it in UNC. Guess need to call the FA office.

Any new reports of scholarship notifications today?

I just got an email with the subject line “You’re invited to Admitted Student Day.” Only email I’ve gotten regarding the fact that I was admitted other than the acceptance to Honors Carolina.

I just got that email too.

Yesterday I received an email saying a received the Johnston scholarship (OOS), and today, they sent an email talking about admitted students day. Then it mentioned about requesting a travel grant. I just wanted to know more about how the travel grant program works. Is it a set amount of money they give, or does it depend on how far away you, or if you are flying do they give you a ticket? Also do they pay for a hotel overnight for family members or would I just stay on campus. Any other information would also be appreciated. I couldn’t really find out much about it for undergraduate students, so if anyone knows anything about it, thanks!

@ncbusymom Last year we were told by admissions that approx. 40 students were offered Kenan-Flagler direct admission through Excel@Carolina… it’s a very small number. We followed up with questions at K-F admissions office as to the profile of freshman who are admitted to K-F later and were told applicants had an average 3.8-3.9 GPA, among other school activities, and there is also a second chance to apply sophomore year. As things change rapdily in college admissions, these are great questions to ask again this year.

@gts789 – Congrats!!! What a great accomplishment! I don’t have any info for you – I suggest contacting the scholarship office.

So now there are two folks (I think) reporting Johnston scholarships and several Carolina Scholars.

Still waiting to hear if anyone’s received the Robinson or Pogue! Bueller, bueller. . .

I’m really holding out hope for Pogue tbh. My personal essay was about my experience growing up gay in the rural south and how it has influenced me to go into politics. I also wrote about racial issues in my “what would you change about where you live” essay. I have my finger crossed that I have a chance at it. But at any rate, I’m really happy just to be accepted. Good luck to everyone else who’s nervously waiting like me! I know it sucks, haha.

When will all merit be given out by?

Emailed admissions a few days ago with the following:

“I was accepted to UNC through early admission and was also accepted to join Honors Carolina. I was wondering whether emails/notifications for merit-based aid/scholarships have already been sent out, and if they have not yet been sent, approximately when those will be sent out. I saw on the UNC website that they are supposed to be sent out in early January, but since decisions were not yet out in early January, I wasn’t sure if that was up to date or not.”

Got this as a response:

"Congratulations on your acceptance to Carolina and the Honors Carolina program! As I am sure you know, the UNC admission process is particularly competitive as an out-of-state student. I hope you already know that we recognize you as a standout among your peers and would be proud to count you among our student body.

Emails for merit scholarships did go out with admission decisions on Friday. We know there are far more highly qualified students like you than we have merit scholarship to award. Only about 8% of our first-year class will be offered a merit scholarship of any kind, and that percentage is even smaller when looking at out-of-state students only.

We know that you would thrive at Carolina, and our first-year class would be stronger with you in it. We hope you will accept our offer of admission and choose to become a Tar Heel! But should you decide to attend a different university, know that we wish you all the best as you pursue your undergraduate education."

Son got Robinson scholarship email yesterday.
