Okay. Sometimes I wonder if people ask about their “chances” just to brag, because honestly a lot of the time (not all) they’re outstanding candidates. Is it a confidence problem? Can’t you logically tell that you have top notch chances? Since this is UNC there’s no way for anyone to tell you you’re 100% getting in (unless their in admissions - unlikely) but with such amazing stats you’d have to have something crappy hidden somewhere to wreck your chances. I don’t know how admissions does their thing, but the moral of my story is SHUSH, YOU’RE AMAZING, you don’t need to hear someone else say it for it to be true.
Does anyone know if financial aid can be appealed?
@Carolinadad: You might ask @twogirls, as she has a pretty good handle on financial aid matters (or perhaps she will weigh in on your question).
@Carolinadad - yes, financial aid can be appealed. Have you looked on the website on how to go about and what information you need to provide? I think it can be somewhat involved so you may only want to appeal to one or two top choices for your student. I don’t have personal experience on this, but one of my co-workers appealed to UNC last year due to complicated asset sharing between her and her ex husband. In the end, they came back saying she needed to pay more b/c of a mistake she’d made on her forms. Not sure how common that is.
Yes financial aid can be appealed if you have a special circumstance… be prepared to deliver all of the necesssary documents from employers, tax forms etc. You will be assigned a financial aid counselor who will guide you through the process.
@twogirls They previously requested my tax documents and I sent them all. Our AGI meets the Covenant Scholar criteria, but was offered aid which included loans. Would they count equity in our home and some 410k savings against us?
@Carolinadad - I’m not sure about 401k savings, but since UNC is a CSS Profile college I am pretty sure they do look at home equity in determining aid.
No… they should not count home equity and 401 k savings against you. It is possible that your contributions for the fafsa year will be added back in to your income, but your previous savings will not count.
Are loans usually included for Covenant Scholars?
@twogirls - This indicates home equity does matter for CSS Profile colleges such as UNC. https://www.forbes.com/sites/troyonink/2015/07/31/forbes-best-colleges-the-secret-to-financial-aid-is-in-your-house/#74db49685fb3
@twogirls No, Covenant Scholars are loan free. The student only pays EFC ( which can be up to $4000) and work study ($2700). That is what I expected, but the aid package also included $4200 in loans. While graduating with $17,000 in loans is not that bad, it’s not a good way to start adulthood.
UNC meets the fafsa EFC. They did not count equity in our FA package. And… the profile is only filled out once… freshman year.
when do admissions decisions get sent out?
Anyone know when regular decision comes out for those who have been deferred?
@emmab15 According to the website, the only thing stated is that decisions will be released at the end of March. There has been speculation about after 4pm on Friday 3/30, due to looking at past regular decision notification dates. But that is only SPECULATION. Good luck to you!
@my3sonshines Thank you! I received the same email today that I got on January 24th (two days before early action decisions were released) so I am hopeful they will come out this Friday. I’m not getting my hopes up on the outcome but it will be good to know if it is a yes or no! Thanks for the luck; it means a lot.
@emmab15 Yes, sounds like tomorrow is the day. My son is in the same boat as you. Best of luck. You both will end up where you’re meant to be.
@emmab15 We are in the same boat! UNC is my dream school and I am terrified. I cried for 3 days in January when EA came out. I just had surgery so I am going to look at my decision and then pop a sleeping pill lol. Where else are you looking? I’m OOS so private schools are probably going to come through for me.
Good luck to everyone tomorrow!
Any rumblings out there? Feels like the calm before the storm.
@waiting2022 My DD was alreayd rejected today, so perhaps not yet hearing is a good sign.
