@SlimJim005 : Twin A had a 34/1490/ 3.8/4.9, was ranked in the top 50 of 700+. This was at graduation, his rank was in the 90s when he applied. He was deferred, waitlisted, and accepted at UNC. He was already keen on State, he chose to go there.
Twin B had a 35/1510/4.0/5.24, ended up in the top 10, though he was in the top 20 when he applied. He was accepted, is at UNC.
Both played in State level Honors Orchestras, had nearly 300 service hours, completed 8/13 and 11/13 APs with a 5, the rest with a 4. They started a Math Tutoring initiative during study hall hours at their high school, once they completed Calc AB/BC.
Both were accepted into their majors after one semester: Nutrition Science & Biological Sciences (Integrative Physiology & Neurobiology) at State, and Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences at UNC. They’re both doing well where they are. I hope this helps.
@projectmgr One could make the same claim to UC Berkeley and UCLA in that being part of the UC system is not what it used to be and the ease of application to these schools inflates the applicant pool and hence the acceptance rates. Specific to UNC, it is an elite school (along with UVA, Michigan, UC Berkely, UCLA, FL, TX, IL, etc). What makes it unique compared to say an Illinois or TX, or even UF is its size and history. With 18K undergrad, it and UVA are smaller institutions with high quality students and high reputations with other schools and employers and is located in the stereotypical college town. Much is said about the limit of OOS students, but it is quite difficult these days to get into UNC instate, especially if you are from the Research Triangle or Charlotte area. Plenty of instate students with great grades and scores denied. That said, the flagship state schools in most states are great institutions that will give very similar educations.
@essel Thanks very much. That helps a lot. I am surprised Twin A was even deferred and waitlisted, given that he was in state. His stats look really good.
I’m from Mecklenburg county but live on the union county line. The neighborhood across from me is half Union half Mecklenburg. While my neighborhood is somewhatmiddle class just down the road from me is lower income areas. I’m first generation. Does anyone know if they take that into consideration. Does being first gen help at all? My ACT score is match for UNC but my GPA is low due to extenuating circumstances which were explained on common app.
@cashcarti UNC wants to accept more students from rural counties, so it’ll be harder to get in from counties like Wake since they might be over represented
@SlimJim005 , His stats were not good enough to put him in the top 10% at his High School, when he applied- that’s how competitive it is, out here! UNC typically accepts around 75-80 kids from his school. We found that the top 45-50 students are almost always accepted. The remaining 30 students, usually came from all over the class, for various reasons. Being Asian, Twin A’s best chance was to be in the top 50, like his brother, but he was accepted eventually, though he chose to go elsewhere. Im not sure he would have gone even if he’d been accepted in January- he was looking at more niche majors, and the boys wanted to go to different schools.
@essel. Thanks very much. I’m OOS, so I’m hopeful. My test scores are over the 75 percentile for OOS if looking at last year, but … You never really know.
