Honestly not sure. There will probably be some changes but I can’t see it being drastic
out of state here too, I’m happy with my stats and they seem pretty on par with what the school wants but I have no expectations of getting in due to the chaos and being out of state
Based on the increase in applications to more selective state schools I would suspect the bar will be higher this year
“This year #CommonApp increases are most pronounced at large universities and more selective (admit<50%) schools. A 9% increase in the application per applicant ratio on top of changes to the process and in the world, will challenge yield models more than ever this year.”

Yeah UNC already said they received 10% more applications this year for EA than last year
more applications doesn’t necessarily mean the bar will be higher… it just means there are more applications. From what I’ve read, the additional applications are primarily a result of the test-optional approach this year. Kids who typically wouldn’t have applied based on test scores are now taking a shot.
Just a guess here, but I’m assuming that the number of potential students didn’t skyrocket overnight. So we either have the same number of people applying to more schools at the same time (so 10 schools instead of say 5) or there are more people applying to reach schools that are test optional. If that’s true, I would assume that the top candidates will get in anyway, but likely to create much more subjectivity / chaos for the middle of the pack. Just a thought…
i agree… i think people who are generally strong applicants will still be seen the same way. also submitting decent test scores is probably an advantage this year
You are right. Honestly nobody knows what the applicant pool looks like compared to previous years. One one hand, many high stats in-state kids that would have otherwise applied to highly competitive private out of state schools are choosing to remain in-state so they aren’t paying 60k for online classes. Perhaps wanting to nest close to home during the pandemic will have an affect. I agree that being test-optional this year is a significant contributor to the increase in applications.
I am OOS, with high stats. I have at least 6 friends that applied to UNC this year ONLY because they could do test optional. I think this will add a lot of applications that may not be up to par with what UNC normally accepts. I would think USC would have to question why someone wouldn’t send a score? I saw a statistic that Notre Dames Restrictive EA acceptances were made up of 30% kids who did not send scores. If that happens at UNC, it will definitely change the make-up of who gets in, at least from OOS.
I think GPA is king this year. Depending on how many test optional candidates there are, UNC will take a certain percentage of them. I no longer think that a candidate with a high test will outdo an optional candidate. 70% of UPenn’s EA applicants submitted tests, but 24% of admitted students didn’t submit a test. University of Pennsylvania Class of 2025 Early Decision Program | Penn Admissions I personally think this will be a very tough year for those expecting to get in PRIMARILY based on a high ACT/SAT test.
Super nervous to get decisions this week… especially coming from Wake where it is super competitive. However I heard a lot of people from my school get in- almost double where my class rank is. Definitely my top choice, good luck to everyone!! Friday will be an exciting day!!
I agree. Not sure a great test score excuses lower GPAs but certainly won’t work this year I don’t think. UGA admitted a third of people early action without tests. Grades were a little higher than the early admits last year as were number of AP classes taken. Test scores were also higher so presumably the people who submitted test scores had strong ones. Overall every metric for EA admitted students was higher than last year. Applications were up 30 percent as well so they had many more applications to choose from.
Not sure if this means anything but heard from one of my friends who is currently a freshman at UNC that they emailed all first year students that their admissions portal accounts from last year will be disabled tomorrow. Maybe could suggest an earlier decision date than Friday?
ah hopefullyyyy
omg stop now i’m getting my hopes up:sob:
Maybe tomorrow! To not cause tons of traffic on the site!!
unc, can we just get this over with? i am begging you…
Is it too late to chance me? I’m a Virginia student with a 4.62 GPA (10 of 421) and 1450 SAT (Lower than I’d like but I included that I only got to take it once cause of COVID cancellations). I put down Linguistics for my major and indicated I was interested in the flagship Russian program (BRAND new thing they have there now). Went to a three-week German immersion camp governor’s school which is highly selective, founded a club for aspiring linguists, co-captained debate and academic team, was a drum major in marching band, a couple other smaller clubs. National honors society, AP scholar stuff and a national German award too. I am SUPER nervous for decisions and hope that somebody has some encouraging words for me :))
you sound pretty solid, Good Luck!
you too!!
