That’s actually on target. UNC looks for 5 APs throughout your high school years. I think you have a decent shot even though you are OOS. Good Luck!
Don’t get down on yourself. I thought I was a lost cause to get into UT Austin OOS for business. But I ended up getting accepted. I had similar stats to you accept for no test score. Anything can happen. Keep your head up. I also applied EA (OOS) to UNC as well.
Hey guys! I know these chance me posts get a bit annoying, but I am just so nervous. What do you think my chances are with these stats:
In-State (Orange County)
4.0 UW/ 4.5 W
20/300 class rank, Top 7%
Dually-enrolled with 45 college credits
NO TEST SCORES
Low-income
Founded my school’s students in action club, interned with the local Democrat party, worked with the UNC Young Dems and led a local drama club that advocated LGBTQ+ awareness.
Over 500 hours of volunteer work.
I am the highschool liaison in my community college’s honor society and the treasurer of our Beta Club.
I got a recommendation letter from the leader of the UNC Young Dems, who is a close friend of mine.
Thank you for any input, and good luck to everyone, the time is almost here!!! <3
Looks very strong. I assume the dual-enrollment are equivalent to AP courses? Supposedly UNC looks for 8 of those and so you seem set on that metric. Essays will be another factor, which are pretty subjective. Your EC’s look terrific. Good luck!
@UTSquared Where did you hear 8 APs? I have always heard they look for at least 5.
Does anyone know if being from Ohio could help me given that the midwest is relatively low when it comes to demographic makeup of UNC?
School guidance counselor. But I know the article you are probably thinking about that said 5.
@UTSquared We did a UNC tour in fall of 2019 and in the presentation they said they don’t really pay attention to anything beyond 5 APs. (hard to believe, but that’s what he said)
I don’t doubt they said that, that’s been their public position since at least 2013:

I asked our older daughter’s guidance counselor about that in 2017 and she said that their experience with UNC has been more like 8 as the optimal number. Obviously, that will depend on what your school offers, but it is hard for me to believe that UGA’s accepted EA student range of AP’s was 8-13, and UNC’s is only going to be looking for 5.
@UTSquared I hear ya, I’m not saying that their official stance is reality. It also could be that while they don’t formally give brownie points for more than 5 APs, the people with 8+ also tend to be the ones with higher GPA, more leadership, blah blah blah (over achievers), so it ends up all correlating anyway. I guess we’ll see! I think my daughter has 10 including the 4 this year, and I always wonder how they factor in senior year AP classes to the mix when the classes aren’t done yet. I know someone who only had 2 APs prior to senior but has loaded up on APs this year; does that make up for it? Who knows.
I will have 7 through senior year, but with 19 honors classes as well (Wake County) & 4.0UW and 4.45W with a 35 ACT. I was lucky enough to get into UGA with a scholarship and I didn’t have the middle 8-13 APs they posted. UNC is my top so I am hoping for the best. Good luck to everyone!
With all of those other factors working for you, I can’t believe 7 vs. 8 will make a difference in their decision. Good luck, UNC is our daughter’s #1 as well, and there isn’t a close #2. Really wish UNC did ED like UVA does.
@dancer7381 Good luck, you look like a very strong candidate! My daughter was admitted into UGA honors but no scholarship, so congrats on the scholarship!! Well done.
My son was an early admit to UGA with almost same stats except 6 APs thru senior year. Since you are in state for UNC you have a good shot even from Wake County. UNC is a reach for all who are OSS who are not athletes or a legacy. Good luck!
Does anyone know how to withdraw your application from UNC. I can’t find a withdraw button on the portal
I think you have to directly email admissions. That’s what I did.
Excitedly awaiting morehead cain decisions for semifinalists tomorrow! Did anyone here apply to that from in state?
thanksss, how long did it take for them to get back to you?
I just did it tonight and they sent an automated email saying they will get back to me in 3-5 days. But from past experience with contacting admissions, you could get a response as quick as tomorrow afternoon.
@giraffegardener I thought they were Friday for in state? I applied as well. Good luck!
