UNC Frats?

Does anyone have information or thoughts on UNC frats? Are they worth joining or is it better to remain independent? Which ones are the best or what are their different qualities?

I have 3 friends at UNC who are in ATO, one of them currently pledging. They really like it, but personally I don't think I'd ever join one. UNC is big enough that you can party and have a good time without acting like a prep.

Yeah. I agree, my brother thinks they are full of a bunch of kids who wear pink polos and play golf.

those are some awful stereotypes. if you're interested in joining a frat you should go through rush and see how you like it. you don't necessarily have to pledge, and for boys rush is really fun and they give you lots of food and have parties for you and stuff, so either way you won't lose. and not all frat guys are stuck up with "pink polos" and who "play golf". don't stereotype~ you'll miss on a lot of people here if you do!

Fraternities have some ridiculously false stereotypes attatched to them, as well as some very true stereotypes. But here's the thing, frats will give you the chance to meet some awesome friends and give you opportunities that you never would have had otherwise. From throwing parties to joining student organizations, frats make everything easier because someone in the house is likely to be involved in whatever you are interested in and more than willing to help you out. I entered college thinking I never would go Greek but as soon as I went through rush all that went out the window. Join a frat because it will provide you with some awesome experiences.

I simply don't like the lifestyle and elitism associated with frats. I will be able to meet awesome friends, party, and join student organizations without joining a frat. That's the beauty of going to Carolina. If it was MIT, on the other hand, I probably wouldn't survive without frat life due to a lack of social life. I'm just going to see how things go when I enter college. It's too early to make such decisions without knowing who your friends are going to be.

i'll disagree with the anti-frat sentiments expressed on this thread. i'm a current student at UNC, and find that the greek scene is as present or as nonexistent as you want it to be. there are some houses that live up to the negative stereotypes of fraternities, but by and large, those houses aren't looked upon too kindly by the community as a whole (greeks and non-greeks). it's certainly not necessary to participate in any greek activities to have an overly-full social life here, but it's also fun to go to some of the parties on occasion (rush is a good time), and some of the frats/sororities are legitimately full of cool, normal people who are interested in more than getting wasted and being idiots.
