UNC , out of state chances

Our son, a rising senior at a very small school, will be deciding where to apply within the next few months. I, and his grandfather and grandmother, are UNC alumni. His SAT score (730 verbal, 650 math, 600 writing) are fine but not astonishing. His extra-curriculars are mostly basketball, and service trips overseas (China, Mexico). He was also VP of his class for two years. His GPA is around 3.7 unweighted, and he has taken challenging courses.

Can anyone here give me an opinion on whether or not he should be seriously considering putting UNC on his short list of schools to which he will apply?

(go heels!)

As the counselors at UNC just told me and hundreds of other students when I was there this past weekend, if you want to attend... apply

He should retake the SAT. His low SAT score (compared to other OOS applications) will hurt his chances.
