"UNC Panel Chooses 'Covering' for Summer Reading Program

Paraphrased and quoted from the "Chapel Hill News" - Sunday, February 10, 2008

This year's summer reading is: "Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights" by Kenji Yoshino

"Book looks at identify and minority rights in mainstream culture"

The program asks all first-year and incoming transfer students to read this book over the summer and participate in small group discussions led by faculty and staff once they arrive on campus.

In the book, the author uses his Japanese-American and gay identity to illustrate "Erving Goffman's notion of 'covering' - downplaying stigmatizing identities in order to assimilate to the cultural mainstream."

I'm pretty sure it's not REQUIRED, but just highly recommended.
Either way, it seems like an interesting book and I can't wait to read it.

Thanks for posting this. I had been wondering what they would select this year, as I think they've done a good job of selecting interesting books in years past.
