Hello, I am a community college student who is interested in transferring to either NC State or UNC Charlotte for engineering.

I am interested in either electrical/computer engineering or mechanical engineering (I will make a decision once I transfer)

I currently have a 3.7+ GPA. I made an A in chemistry and B in calculus 1.

Majority of my grades are A, few B, one C (won't transfer to NC State but to UNC Charlotte, CHM 121).

For high school, I was a complete slacker and had a horrible GPA/SAT scores. Didn't try at all and was a social animal.

In community college, I am giving everything I can. I am an average student with work ethics of an above average student.

I do have A.D.D which does affect me with my concentration.

I really want to go to. Will NC State be a challenge for me, I don't want to make C's ever again!

With this much information given. If you were in my position, which college would you prefer for engineering.

THANKS for viewing/replying, I appreciate the help!

Alright, this might not mean much coming from a high school student, but here it goes:
NC State has a better reputation with engineering than UNC Charlotte. Even if NC State is more challenging and you make grades a little lower than what you would have made at UNC Charlotte, I think you’ll find a job easily if you attended NC State. I’ve heard somewhere that NC State has a VERY good job placement rate for their engineering majors, but I can’t remember where I read that, so don’t quote me on it…
All in all, I really think that NC State is a better choice overall, even if you weren’t majoring in engineering. It’s reputation is lightyears ahead of UNC Charlotte, at least in North Carolina.
Just my two cents.

My college roommate went to Charlotte for undergrad and NCSU for graduate school. He said that Charlotte’s program was not just a little better, but a lot better than NCSU. He said NCSU had refresher course before FE exam that allowed their students to pass at a slightly higher rate, but other than that Charlotte’s program out-shined theirs in every way. Charlotte’s was more challenging, had better professors, more attention to students, etc. Charlotte also does a Jr. and Sr. project that give a lot of hands-on experience, and allow students to work with industry before they graduate. Additionally, Charlotte is building a new 200,000+ sq ft building dedicated to energy and engineering. A lot of students at Charlotte who got a B- or worse in Calc changed to engineering technology, so if that’s the case you may want to consider NCSU.

I will give the other commenter credit, NCSU has the better reputation at the moment, but I guarantee that will change.

I’m a proud Charlotte alumn, so I’m more than a little biased, but my roommate was not Charlotte’s biggest fan until he attended NCSU. Keep and open mind and do your research. Good luck!

First off, good for you! You seem like you’ve been working really hard, and that’s awesome. NC State is better for engineering, but with that prestigious degree also comes a lot more challenging work. I’m a student at NCSU and I love it! But for someone in your position, you may be better off going to UNCC. Have you thought about going to UNCC for a year (living on campus, getting used to the college life) and then transferring to NCSU? That way you already used to college/campus living and it won’t be such a huge change all at once. Just something to think about. If you want to try NC state though, go for it! If the courseload is too much, you can always switch to UNCC Good luck!!
