Hey! Just checking on this thread, what did your final decision end up being? I am a sophomore transfer student from OOS deciding between UNC and UGA too. I plan on doing management consulting after BBA and participating in Greek life. Also plan on getting MBA later on after work experience.
Hello! So at my graduation this evening, I had the UGA arch on my cap. A mix of honors, finances, opportunities, degree programs, and student life led me to choose UGA over UNC, but when I say it was close, I mean it. I was really splitting hairs, but I absolutely love my school and cannot wait to move in. Hope this helps!
Congrats! Go Dawgs! You’ll have an amazing 4 years!
Congratulations and thanks for updating us!
Go dawgs!! Let’s definitely connect while on campus!
Congrats! Can’t wait!
Hey guys! Hate to do this but I am desperate haha. I just posted a thread and would love some advice if y’all have any wisdom that would pertain to my situation. Thanks!
My daughter has a similar dilemma - OOS student accepted to UGA Honors but just got off the waitlist at UNC.
She wants the benefits and community of an Honors program (advantage UGA) and has also been accepted into the Franklin Residence College, but she wants to study a neuroscience (advantage UNC) and I have many friends in NC and no GA connections.
Any thoughts on which way she should go?
Is she stoked for UGA ? Made arrangements for a roomie, etc. I’d stick with it.
Given a psych major, where guy go is less important aND UGA is no slouch and offers summer research. Getting into Honors at UGA is impressive.
Thanks for the feedback. She is not interested in studying psych; more interested in the biological side of neuroscience (specifically epigenetics/neurophysiology) and is concerned that UGA might not have the same resources that UNC has (plus UNC was her no.1 choice going in) - she selected genetics at UGA. However she has now got her dorm and is muling over the right option.
Hello! So similar to my decision last year, it is a close call. A disclosure: I must say, I absolutely love my school. The atmosphere, community, location, downtown, and diversity (can always be improved, but is there!) are some of my favorite things that I honestly think are unmatched when compared to other schools. Not to mention, I know I had more fun my first year at UGA than I would anywhere else. However, I sometimes think about what would have happened if I was at UNC’s business school (again, Terry is amazing and I love it. Endorse 100%, but you never know what could have been). With that said, if my interest was neuroscience (go your daughter) I would say UNC. UNC is more “preppy” and some might even say more “pretentious”. But, I would say these stereotypes only go so far, because it is not only a respectable institution but a fun one, but it’s academics do have more connections, especially in that area, in my opinion. I absolutely love my school and know that anyone who is ok to put themself out there and get to know people will enjoy UGA more than they could enjoy any other school, while having an exceptional educational experience, but if I’m being honest, I would say UNC in this specific instance. Good luck with the decision and know you are choosing between two right options, especially if she’s already socially embedded within UGA, likes it, and IT MAKES SENSE FINANCIALLY (should always be a TOP priority). If you choose UGA, it will still be a good choice, and you will never have a better experience in your life (Barstool’s #1 rating of Athens as the best college town in America agrees with me). Good luck and GO DAWGS!!
Thanks again, it is so confusing - it really does feel like a toss up, especially with my natural aversion to Carolina as a Wolfpack alum! First we were figuring out UF or UGA (Honors and Athens tipped it) and now we have this decision to make.
She really enjoyed both visits to CH and Athens - Sanford is amazing - and is really into food and country music which she can enjoy in either locale; however, she also plays waterpolo which they have in CH but don’t really have a women’s team for at UGA. Costs are roughly the same for us as we live overseas, but I hear that GPA is everything for med school which would seem to lean more towards UGA.
How would you describe the Honors students? Are the classes challenging and what about the the diversity of the students (many international students)?
Don’t forget many kids can have a great experience at multiple schools so there may not be a wrong choice. And given the choice of major, which will likely need grad school, it likely won’t matter. She wins either way !!
The Honors College is essential to my UGA experience. I would not have been at UGA without it, and I like it so much that I represent it in our Student Government Association’s Senate. The honors classes have less students and discussion is truly more intimate. I absolutely have loved that about it. If you want, you will take very, very few large lecture classes if you’re in the Honors College. Your access to professors is so much better for recommendation purposes, too. Some honors classes are more difficult than the regular section, because the content is either more in depth or we cover more content so everything is on a tighter timeline. That can be hard at times. But, some honors classes are actually significantly easier—my accounting classes, for example, were far easier than what my friends were telling me they had to do in their large lecture classes. Maybe it’s because those are meant to be a weed-out courses for the business school (see who can actually make it into Terry), but regardless, I retained the same amount of information from intimate classroom instruction while doing far less work and operating on a higher level. I’ve loved that, and even if the class is harder, you learn more in a class that you want to take—to me, that’s a win for my education. I would recommend taking as many honors courses in your first two years, because as you get to upper level courses there’s less options and you can make the large classes smaller in smaller level courses. Anyway, I would say that honors students are definitely more studious than regular students, and stereotypically don’t go out as much. However, most are just UGA students who are smart and who work hard to achieve their goals. I won’t lie, there’s not a ton of international students at UGA in general, but certainly more proportionally in the honors college than the school as a whole (maybe, that’s my perception). I have international friends and there’s a ton of resources for international students, but beyond getting to know where you’re from, it’s not that big a deal for us. Like I’ve said, I love the Honors College, and I love UGA. But I also love UGA, so there’s no wrong answer here. For your daughter, I just think UNC is one or two hairs over UGA, but that’s from where I stand. I would say to her: close your eyes and ask yourself what campus you see yourself on during your first day of class. Which one do you like more? It’s that simple when you get to the splitting hairs level… that’s what I did, and I’ve loved my decision the whole way.
