Uncommon Major

I have a strong passion for German and I learned enough German by myself in my freshman year to skip from German I to Honors German III. I will be taking AP German next year and Honors German V my senior year. I want to double major in German and Supply Chain Management (or something else business-related). I know that having an uncommon major normally doesn't matter since many students change their majors, but when I apply for university I will (most likely) have these German related credentials
-paid tutor (4 years)
-free tutor at school (4 years)
-top 4 ranking in my state for the National German Exam (3 years) (I was #2 this year)
-possibly winner of a 3 week study trip to Germany
-member of German club (4 years)
-president of German club (2 years)
-member of NCSU's Stammtisch (coffee hour) (3.5 years)
-probably a 5 on the AP test
-probably a score on the SAT II
-I plan to go for a Zertifikat Deutsch/B1 certification (German examinations - Our examinations - Goethe-Zertifikat B1:
Zertifikat Deutsch - Goethe-Institut )
-I may start a website soon with learning resources for German
-hopefully a lot more! :)

Will a lot of ECs in the area you want to major in help show adcoms you are passionate? Also, I am an URM (African American) and I come from a single parent household, and one of my parents completed their bachelors at one of the schools I would consider attending so I would be a legacy. However, I had a rough freshman year and although I have made significant improvement my freshman GPA is still pulling my cummulative GPA down.

I don’t care for ‘passionate’ as it tends to be overused, but yes, ECs will demonstrate your dedication to your interest in German studies. If you’re asking if this can overcome your fr grades, no one can really tell you that. Keep in mind that colleges are foremost academic institutions, so that’s what they look at first; although they do tend to give some forgiveness for fr year if a student shows significant improvement.

Check out the AA Students forum, under Admissions, Specialty Topics. Also, the Resources sticky thread on the Hispanic Students forum has many scholarship, diversity flyin, etc. opportunities that are open to all URMs.
