Does anyone know about this program? I know the college program is extremely reputable, but how is the high school program? Also, how many do they usually accept?

A number of my daughter’s classmates have gone there for the last year of high school. They take about 20 students out of 400-500 auditioning from around the country. The seniors get the same level of training that the college students receive. Everyone that I know who has auditioned did so to take their training to the next level and every single one of them loved the program and felt that they learned so much. This year they didn’t take many, if any, residents of NC since they go to the high school program entirely free and I heard that they were under pressure to take out of state students (translation: paying). Just know that being in the high school program doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll have an advantage getting accepted to the college program the following year if you audition. Some of my daughter’s friends got into the college and I know of others that did not.

I am currently in the high school drama program and will encourage you to audition, audition, audition. There’s freedom within the curriculum to pursue whatever goals you have in mind, but it is a wonderful opportunity especially if you are aiming to attend a conservatory. Nowhere else will you be so well prepared for college auditions. Plus, we take a trip to Unified Auditions in Chicago in February. It will be awesome to be there to support one another and knock out most (if not all) of our schools at one time.

This year’s class is 25, 16 instate and 9 from outside NC.

If you have any other questions, just let me know!

Hey, ActingDude, so it sounds like the “out of state/in state” thing was a rumor. Thanks for posting the class stats.

Thank you both for your informative responses. ActingDude17, is that correct that 400-500 people audition? I didn’t know it was that selective! Do people from the program go to other schools or most of them stay at UNCSA?

I do not know exactly how many people audition each year, but I can say that admission is very competitive. People from the program go everywhere from liberal arts universities to conservatories to entering straight into the industry. Some do stay at UNCSA, either in the School of Drama or one of the other schools here. Of last year’s 21 person ensemble, 5 or 6 are in the current Studio I, the first level of the college. It also requires a competitive audition.

The audition prep and college admissions guidance UNCSA does with its high school students is pretty phenomenal. it would be worth that alone to go there senior year! I have met a couple of alums (one at Juilliard) and was so impressed!

Only a handful of UNCSA high school program kids were accepted this year to The college program. Not sure if that is typical, but the freshman university drama class size is, what, 26 to 28? They cant and don’t accept all the high school students.

6 of the Freshman class of 28 are from the HS.
