UNCSA

@uncsapickleinfo @bfahopeful

My D is in drama and they don’t officially notify until auditions are over (which is feb or march). I don’t know about the production and design Dept. I suspect it will be the month they mentioned. Good luck! My D loves the school. A very unique experience.

I am auditioning on 1/14! Anyone else? I believe they said on the website that this audition was full. I am excited but I watched that video about the drama audition tips and the dean mentioned that one of my monologues is a bit overdone for them… 8-| Can anyone mention the types of questions they will ask? Thanks!

Don’t worry about the overdone thing. If you are comfortable and confident it will show. They really just talk to you during the interview. I know they asked some kids we know about their resumes (what was most challenging, enjoyable, etc). They wanted to truly get to know the kids - not trip them up. My D said it felt like the one interview out of all she had where the faculty appeared interested in her and wanted to actually get to know her.
I would suggest having a response ready about what excites you about the program at UNCSA specifically. It is a unique program and you can share why you want to be there. Or have a question about something specific to UNCSA that can’t be answered on the web or from the info session they give.

Does anyone know if UNCSA auditions are extremely strict about the 6 minutes to do the 3 monologues and song excerpt? Will they interviewers cut you off at 6 minutes? Everywhere else my daughter has auditioned, they haven’t really timed her.

I don’t think they timed my D. But they were definitely trying to stay on time so I would suggest being as close as possible to what the directions say. BAL!

Thank you! She is very close (probably around 8 minutes).

2 min over is actually quite a bit over. I would try to cut them down if possible. Maybe 60-90 seconds each monologue and 16 bars of song. That should fit easily into 6 min.

For several Auditions last year, my D used various cuts of the same monoluues depending on individual school requirements.

Better to follow their requirements than not in my opinion.

My D loves UNCSA and I am happy to answer any questions

Great! Thank you!

I asked my D and she said to try and stay within the 6 minutes total She said “a little over” should be ok, but not too much.

I’ll chime in here with bfahopeful, offering to answer any questions y’all might have about the school. My son is in his final year and it seems like just yesterday when he was in y’alls shoes, facing the stress and insanely low acceptance rates of these BFA programs. Wishing all of you the best! Definitely watch the video the faculty put out. funny and helpful, I thought. (and the 4th years are mainly the ones in it, so there is extra reason for me to love it :slight_smile:

I am back from my UNCSA audition with lots to think about. My audition went well I suppose. I just felt like they weren’t very in to me. I’m not going to be super hopeful with my decision but if for some crazy reason I do get in I would have to think about it long and hard. No doubt it’s a great program but I’m still thinking if it is right for me.

@WhiteRaven1 - glad you felt good about your audition. Sorry you didn’t get good vibes though.

This process really is tricky and choices/hopes change for each person along the way. My D definitely felt or didn’t feel connected at certain places/auditions --even places she felt where originally her top picks ended up not feeling right to her.

Not every program will feel right to every person and that is one good thing that there are so many different types of schools out there. UNCSA is a very specific program and it isn’t right for all. You will find your place
If you do get accepted at UNCSA they hold an accepted students weekend for drama students only and it is two intensive days to sample what life in their program would be. A great way to help make the decision.

Good luck with your other auditions.

We too auditioned this weekend at UNCSA. This is my third child auditioning for college (D for MT in 2009; S for BFA acting in 2013; and now another S for BFA acting) and UNCSA never came up for the other two. It came up this time and went straight to the top of my son’s list along with another school that was not on our radar before either. After this weekend’s audition, UNCSA remains a top choice and has moved to the #1 spot for sure (he has already auditioned and been accepted at one of his other 2 tops but this one surpassed it.) My D had a school at her top for many reasons that went to the bottom at auditions and my middle S always knew where he wanted to go but I encouraged him to go through the entire process after he had already been accepted at his top choice. He wound up going to his top choice and it was a perfect fit. He will be graduating in May and moving to LA. The point being is that somehow they know what their fit when they find it, they just know it. We just need to listen even if they can’t articulate it. Another interesting thing I found out this morning is the UNCSA is part of a 5 school consortium on drama education and one of the other 5 schools in the consortium is also a top pick of my son’s that I had not heard of during our two previous rounds. Hang in there, this really is a special time and they will ALL wind up where they are supposed to be.

@ANJALU good luck to your son! My D loves it there. She helped at auditions -maybe talked with you. :slight_smile:

We were there too. My daughter loved it. She said her audition went great, she did all 3 monologues, and then burst into tears as soon as we were in the hallway! I think she was worried her interview was a little awkward, but I told her I think they can tell a 17 year old that may be nervous and excited! Stress, anxiety, I’m not sure but I think just the sheer emotion of wanting something , giving it your best and just not knowing if it was enough. This process is emotionally exhausting! But I feel it must get easier… What are the other schools in the five school consortium ? I love the programs that include it all and don’t separate musical theatre from acting… that is more who she is. Starting to see that now…god help us through the next 6 weeks…

@musicmama123 I only know of 4 schools in the consortium of conservatory theater training programs. They are UNCSA, SUNY Purchase, Carnegie Mellon, and Boston Universiy. I think Rutgers used to be part of it, but not sure if it is anymore.
They hold auditions at same time and place regionally (at/around unifieds). All are still individual auditions.

Here is info from web:
Consortium of Conservatory Theatre Training Programs is an alliance of professional theatre training conservatories offering focused programs in a university environment. The members of the consortium include Boston University, Carnegie Mellon University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, and the State University of New York at Purchase. Auditions held in major cities in January and February.

@bfahopeful thanks !

I believe Rutgers is still a member. They are holding auditions in NY the weekend after Unifieds along with UNCSA and Purchase. My D has all three that weekend. CMU is having theirs on that Wednesday before. Make it four with CMU.

Thank you! We met several lovely young ladies who love their program very much.
