So i know i want to definitely become an engineer because i love math and how things work and stuff but i dont know which type i want to become yet. My question is do they kind of give you background info and teach about all of the different types of engineering during your freshman year so you can then declare a major? I have researched all over the internet about the different kinds but i would like to actually see hands on what actually each specialty learns about and does.

Probably depends on what school you go to. At UF, they have a class called “Intro to Engineering” for undecided engineering majors. I didn’t take it so I can’t say what they really do in that class but it’s supposed to help students find which field of engineering interests them most.

I’m pretty sure most colleges have this sort of a class. What I would suggest though is see if there are any projects in your school’s mech/aero department that allow freshmen to join and do the project for about a year. You’ll get exposure to alot of different fields (mechanical / materials / electrical etc.) since mech/aero incorporate so many diff fields.
