Undecided help or hinder?

<p>Does choosing to apply undecided help or hinder your chacnes of getting into a college?</p>

<p>Oft asked question. Conventional wisdom: no effect.</p>

<p>It depends on the college or university. It may also depend on the division within a college or university divided into divisions.</p>

<p>For example, San Jose State University, a mid-level (in selectivity) state university, admits students by major. The fall 2012 admissions cycle thresholds are here:

<p>Note that the undeclared major was more selective than some specific majors, but less selective than others. Once at SJSU, a student needs to apply to change or declare a major, since some majors have limited space available.</p>
