Undecided Major

Hi all,

I'm a high school senior looking at schools. Carnegie Mellon looks like a really cool place, and Pittsburgh a cool city. The only reservation about CMU is that there are different colleges. I'm completely undecided on what I want to do. Engineering, social/natural science, humanities; all interesting to me. I'm hoping that once I get to college I'll "click" with one department and that'll make my choice. That's what happened with both my parents. I'm worried though that having to go to one college straight off will limit my choices. How does one take classes at another college at CMU? What if I want to change majors across colleges? I've seen other threads asking about splits between differently majored students... I'm looking mostly at liberal arts colleges because of my indecision, but I thought I would ask about CMU because it seems like a great school.

the college of Humanities & Social Sciences at CMU is what you want, then. You are not required to declare a major for two years (and for one year, all students are ‘undecided’; you cannot declare until the end of your freshman year).

The general ed curriculum of HSS requires students to take math/CS, science/engineering, history, language, and arts courses. You are also required to take a diverse set of 5 courses your freshman year that will expose you to a few different areas of HSS. I don’t think most HSS students come in knowing what they want to do, to be honest. Many of my HSS friends changed their majors or did not declare until the end of last year (my sophomore year).
