I do not have a particular major I am interested in but I was looking around and noticed that there is no undecided button to choose. Does Carnegie Mellon not accept undecided as a major or can I pick a department and then choose undecided as my major?

You can apply to as many as 5 Carnegie Mellon Colleges. Do not have to declare a major in any of them (I think). You rank order them, apply to as many as you can, because each is a separate chance and considers you individually. You need to write about your interest in each college in the supplement, though, or that college supposedly won’t look at your application. Once you get in the school, you can change around in the colleges (though it is tough to get into SCS and Fine Arts.

uh oh, I typed in “undecided” on the common application supplement for cmu…

Call them I’m sure they would be glad to change your application…If you wrote undecided exactly what did you write your Why CMU essay on?

is it something to get penalized for? for other schools, they just had a dropdown menu of majors and had an option for “undeclared” or “undecided” so that’s what I chose for all my other colleges. CMU is the only one that made me actually type it out and I just put the same thing…

as for my why cmu essay, i wrote about my diverse set of interests and how i want to take advantage of certain programs and internships offered to HSS students to explore them and find a career that suits my wide range of interests.

I doubt you would get penalized but I still think you should call them. Worst case scenario they looked at your essay and put you down for undecided H&SS which isn’t that bad.

I don’t know what to tell them though! =( I don’t want to sound stupid and make an idiot out of myself, like I did with one of my interviewers, heh.
