Ok... I am undecided on MSE w/ Biomed or ECE /w possible robotics minor. If I put MSE on my app and in my essay, can I change if I want to freshman year. I know that you have to declare your major spring freshman year, so does this mean whatever I put on my app it doesnt matter as long as I am in CIT?

Also, does it reduce my chances if I put ECE on my app?

Also... My supplement essay puts an emphasis on engineering but mainly with robotics, and my common app essay is about robotics(Its what I spent a lot of my time in high school doing). would it be better to include MSE or ECE in my supplement essay (along with selecting that major)?

My son is a freshman in CIT. One of the requirements freshman year is to take two intro to engineering courses, one each semester. I also remember in the acceptance letter that he would be admitted to any engineering major. So I think you might be able to take each intro course and decide.

As a freshman engineer at CMU you're required to take two intro engineering courses. So you'd be able to take ECE in the fall and then MSE in the spring. I'd recommend taking the course you're more interested in in the fall, though, since you have to make up your schedule for the fall of your Sophomore year during the middle of the spring semester.

ECE does have a limited amount of students it accepts separate from the school of engineering, so there is a possibility you'd get into CIT but not ECE. However, I think they take most people that are interested in it, and if you still want to try ECE you should definitely take the into in the fall and bust your ass to be sure you get an A. Then you still would stand a chance at getting in. Even if you don't, you'll still be able to do MSE (aka the best major ever).
