Undecided, which school should she choose?

Would like some feedback please! My daughter just realized she is swaying towards Undecided Engineering. She has narrowed it down to Penn State University Park (accepted Undecided), University of Delaware (accepted for Animal Sciences - her 2nd choice) and really liked Rensselaer (waitlisted for undecided Engineering ). How easy is it to make Penn State’s and UDel’s Engineering school if going in undecided or changing your major? What is your social life at Rensselaer and do you have any regrets? (the tuition is ridiculous). If not RPI if she does make it, Penn State or UDel? She did prefer a smaller school.

If she likes the small school feel stay away from PSU for obvious reasons.

However - going in undecided has no real bearing on your major at Penn State. When she first schedules classes and meets with an adviser they’ll vet her for her possible interests in majors and help her pick a track that will allow her to do what she wants. As long as she meets the same requirements those admitted directly to the college of engineering are held to, she is guaranteed to be in her major

Those two schools were my top choice. I was leaning towards UD because I really liked the campus, but for money reasons I decided PSU and I fell in love with the school. Penn state has an amazing engineering program but It is a large school. UD has a good engineering program (chemical is top 10) and it smaller than UD and they love to say how its small enough to get a sense of community. I got accepted to Penn State for undecided and my admissions lady for my city said all I have to do is pass the placement exam and I could be put into my major ASAP. I was undeclared engineering for UD and all I would have done is talk to my academic advisor as well.

@Darcelrn‌ Curious…what placement exam in PSU did you have to take? The ALEKS math assessment, or did you mean another exam?

Just to clear up confusion. Nobody is admitted into their major at PSU until the end of their second year. The major you are admitted to is 99.9% irrelevant because as an undecided you can still take all of the same classes as someone who “accepted” to engineering.

Through your first few semesters you take entry to major courses. If your GPA in general, and grades in those classes meet certain requirements then you are actually accepted to the major.

BTW - Son loves RPI, Daughter loves PSU.

Thanks. My nephew also goes to PSU (Business major), not Engineering, and I know its one of the more difficult majors, so I was wondering if it works the same way when going in Undecided. BTW, both are great schools, you must be very proud.

‘Nobody is admitted into their major at PSU until the end of their second year.’

This is not exactly true. There are a few majors that you must be admitted to directly as a freshman…like architecture and nursing.

@foilist I took the placement exam.
