Undeclared Major

My daughter was accepted into StonyBrook for Fall 2010 - she applied as Undeclared. What do you do if you decide prior to fall semester you want to major in Business? Also if you are undeclared can you transfer into any of the majors easily?

In general, it varies a bit from program to program. Engineering and Business, specifically, do have minimum requirements in order to declare the major. Full details should be on all of the respective program Web sites.

The BUS major at SB is treated a bit different from most of the others. For a transfer I know its a 3.2 instead of the usual 3.0 GPA requirement, but from the sound of it I’d guess your daughter is a first year student which only makes things easier for choosing a discipline. Overall the decision making process for or between majors is easy at SB. In other words don’t worry about it and end up making the wrong choice. For now focus on what they call D.E.C requirements. Get those out of the way while they provide a good flavor of different areas that could open a completely new set of interests for the selection of concentration.

Thanks. Will there be an admitted students day where undeclared will be discussed?

Yes – our admitted students day will be on April 17. We’ll have more details in the next couple of weeks.
