I am currently a sophomore at Hunter College, CUNY and have a 3.3 GPA with 25 credits. I wanted to know if I would have better chances as a transfer if i declared my major (computer science) or went as undeclared. Also on the SUNY application it says that I should contact the school if I apply as a Comp Sci major. Does anyone know why I need to contact the school?

My daughter is a junior with marginal grades who has spent the last 5 semesters at the University of Hartford majoring in education and received her associates degree. During December 2013, she considered changing majors and was also faced with the financial aspect of continuing at Hartford. She decided to take the spring semester (2014) off and stay at home, taking a few courses at the local community college with the thought of transferring to a SUNY University for the winter (2015) semester. She’s now applied at Several SUNY Universities and have been requested to advise why there was an “interruption of education”.
The question is, should she be honest and explain that she wasn’t sure of her education path/major and needed time to think it through or fabricate a story about a “family matter” requiring her to be closer to home as well as a financial hardship. I’m all for being truthful, but at the same time want her to stand the best chance of being accepted at a SUNY and believe the sob story will increase her chances. Can Universities request documentation/information demonstrating a “family emergency”? Any comments or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,
