Under what circumstances should you apply Early Decision?

I always thought ED was for those people who had GPA and LSAT numbers around the 25th percentiles for any given school. Logically, it seemed to me, that they were the people who were most likely to try to get in early to a good reach school, by promising to attend that law school if they were accepted. BUt recently I heard that only people in the 75th percentiles of GPA and LSAT scores should apply ED since law schools try to let in only the best early on since it is binding. Which have you heard? Who should apply ED?

How each school uses ED varies, but one thing is certain: If your numbers place you at the 75th percentiles for both GPA and LSAT, you should not do ED. Doing so removes any incentive the law school might have for giving merit aid, though some apparently still give such aid even for ED admits.

Your best bet is to check ED applicants on lawschoolnumbers.com. From my cycle, UVA seemed most alike the line of thought in the first half of your post.
