I'm a junior right now, planning on submitting my application over the summer. I'm planning on majoring in psychology, but my guidance counselor told me it may give me a better chance of getting into Pitt if I apply undecided. Is this true? Should I apply undecided, or will it make no difference in the admissions decision?

I don’t think it will make any difference. If psychology is really what you think you want, and you want to play it safe, just go with “undecided”. Being undecided won’t prevent you one bit from majoring in psych. I don’t think it will make any difference on your admission decision though.

All arts and sciences students are initially considered “undecided” at Pitt. There is no advantage/disadvantage to stating your planned major as psychology.

Declaring your major is only relevant if you are applying to one of the non-A&S schools (such as Engineering or Nursing). However, if you have any pre-professional interests (pre-med, PT, etc.) you should definitely put that down. Pitt offers guaranteed grad school admission to its professional schools to students with a strong high school academic record.
