Back in November, I got into Ohio State University’s Honor Program (instate). I also got a $4,000 scholarship from OSU, bringing the tuition to under 20k per year. I have previously posted on this forum, and a common understanding I have received is to go to an instate option for pre-med. I’d like to get more insight regarding this. Thanks!
I see on-line that the in-state tuition for OSU is less than $11,000. Thus I am guessing that you mean that your scholarship brings the total cost of attendance under $20,000, which is very good. I also see on-line that OSU has a very good medical school.
I think that for pre-med this is a very good plan. OSU is certainly a strong enough school that if you do very well there then you will be solidly on track for a very good medical school. Given your stats from another thread, it looks like as long as you are ready to work hard and understand that premed will be tough anywhere (including at OSU) you should be capable of doing very well there. By choosing to go to a relatively very reasonably priced university, you are likely to be avoiding debt and saving money for medical school. Being in the honor’s program is a good plus also. Going to a university that has a strong medical school should open up some volunteering options as well in a medical setting.
The majority of students who enter university on a premed track end up eventually changing their minds, and pursuing a different path. Of course there are many other very good paths. OSU is large enough and diverse enough that it will have a wide range of other options available to you.
As such I think that if you stick to premed, then this is a very good plan. If you decide on a different path, then this is a very good plan.
I see on another thread that you also originally applied to some universities that might be ranked slightly higher. However, do not take OSU lightly. Premed at OSU is going to be a lot of work, and many of the classes will be tough. There will be many other very strong students in your classes. Again from your stats on another thread it looks like you have the brains and the preparation to do very well there.
OSU is more than sufficient to get you into medical school and being able to go there for 4 years for less than half the cost of one year of any Ivy League school is a very sweet deal when the next step of your education will be over $300k easily.
Where else have you been admitted and how much will it cost?
If you don’t end up staying premed, will you be happy you chose tOSU?
@MYOS1634 Around 8 of my decisions come out in April, so I am still waiting on those. I do like OSU, and I believe that I will stick to the pre-med track.
Don’t worry about it until April then
Any other suggestions would be helpful!
