Undergrad Hours per Semester for PhD Admissions

Do grad schools care how many hours you take per semester? Will someone who takes only 14-15 hours every semester but still fulfills all of their requirements and has a good GPA be at a significant disadvantage over someone who takes many hours (let's say 18+) and also has a good GPA? Or is this difference minimal / nonexistent?

And what if we get 14-15 hours with only 4 classes per semester? Do they want us to take 5 classes per semester or what?

Nobody cares how many hours you take per semester. In fact, if you take a bazillion course hours each semester, you may be at a disadvantage in graduate admissions, because the distinguishing factor in your application is research experience, not coursework - and if you take 18+ units per semester, you probably wouldn’t have time to gain research experience through REUs, internships, etc.

Don’t think it matters that much. I guess it’s a good signal if you can take many classes and do well, but I don’t think any faculty member’s ever looked that closely at transcripts.

Ah, thanks guys. Good to hear!
